Minecraft Player Spends two Years Building a Virtual City

Minecraft player spends two years building virtual city By Zoe Kleinman Technology reporter, BBC News

17 October 2014

A Delaware student spent two years developing the virtual world he called Titan City in Minecraft.

Titan City is comprised of 4.5 Million Minecraft building blocks. It also has 96 buildings.

Duncan Parcells claims it took him two years to construct and he is able to devote up to five hours a week working on the project.

The first building he built was a virtual version of the World Trade Center, which took 18 months to perfect.

The 19-year-old, however, says Titan City is not a realistic model of New York.

"It's inspired by New York," he said to the BBC.

"A majority of people believe that it's a pastime, but it's not."

He initially built the city with the Xbox 360 version, but he has since switched it to the PC version that he claims has more construction options.

Mr. Parcells plans to build an airport and a sports stadium.

He said, "I suppose it's an outlet to energy and architecture."

"I've always loved architecture. I am most happy with Victorian-style buildings that are less modern and more art deco.

"A lot of people stop in and want to explore the area or assist in the construction." Many of them assist with the roads."

While Titan City has received a warm welcome online and offline, Mr. Parcells stated that up to now he has kept his virtual world separate from his everyday life.

"I've kept it a secret, it's kind of like an extra life that I don't talk about but people are beginning to look into it," he said.

"My parents think it's cool - I'm guessing they're just happy I don't play it so often."

Microsoft recently announced that it will purchase Minecraft studio Mojang for $2.5bn (PS1.5bn).

Markus Persson, aka Notch announced that the game had reached 100 million users in February 2014.

After the initial purchase, Minecraft is free to download and play. However there are in-game purchases available.

The game is played in a virtual environment made up of cubes made of various materials. Almost all of these can be used as building blocks, and a few of them can be refined into usable raw materials (wood diamond, iron, etc).

The game requires you to survive by building shelters using blocks and transform raw materials and mixtures of them into objects (swords and armour, bows, etc.) to fight the various monsters that are in the game.
