The cultural juggernaut known as "Minecraft" has been in existence for more than 10 years.



Despite other big games that have swept up millions of players such as "Fortnite" and "Roblox," "Minecraft" remains the most popular.



As as of this week, the game has more than 112 million players every month.



This is a rise of more than 20 million players since the last time Microsoft announced the number, in October of 2018 - an incredibly large growth in players, especially considering that the game has been around for more than 10 years. The number includes players across gaming consoles, computers mobile devices, as well as the education-focused version of the game.



Notably, "Minecraft" isn't free on the various platforms it's available on.



The game was purchased by the tens of million of "Minecraft" players who added the game to their collection during the past year, whether it was purchased directly from a store, as part of Microsoft's Game Pass subscription service, or downloaded.

Early success has lasted



Since its inception the game has been a huge hit. "Minecraft" was an unfinished game developed by Markus "NotchPersson. Persson. It had basic graphics and controls. It was only available for PC. It was prone to breaking, because it was an unfinished program made by a single person.



Yet, millions of people still played and bought the first version of "Minecraft".



The tech industry was shocked and confused when Microsoft purchased the game in 2014 for $2.5 Billion.



However, that initial success has persisted under Microsoft's guidance over the last five years.



"What we've found is that it's a game that people keep coming back to," Helen Chiang (Minecraft) director of the studio, said to Business Insider in a telephone interview this week. "It might not always be the one that's on the cutting edge however, as there are many amazing games that continue come out but it's one players are drawn to returning to."



Why "Minecraft" has been such a hit
