Once you've Installed NetBSD

Clara and I run Minecraft on our home FreeBSD server inside a jail, which keeps Java and other dependencies in one isolated place. Theoretically you can run the server on any platform that supports Java, including Linux and possibly even NetBSD however I haven't tried it yet.

I couldn't let it go! The good news is that you can run an Minecraft server on another favorite OS. This is how I did it. I'm sure there are many more.

Getting Java installed

After you have installed NetBSD and set up networking and then enable pkgin you will need an OpenJDK installed to run Minecraft.

Minecraft 1.17 onwards requires OpenJDK 17 however, OpenJDK 16 is the latest in the most current snapshot as of July 2022. To confirm, you can search:

If you're 16 years old, you can still pull current packages by opening the repo file.

Then changing the repo URL In my case, 9.0 to 9.0_current

This was a great project. He does a tremendous amount of work for the NetBSD community. I feel like I owe him an espresso or a drink next time I'm fortunate enough to travel to Japan.

We are now able to install along with a few other useful tools.

Running Minecraft

This location is a good one to run Minecraft just like any Java-enabled server. I combined all my files:

Log in as my local user to begin:

We can now start!

You'll notice Java throws an error that states "system not supported that we using NetBSD know all too well. It's safe to ignore according to my tests.

Once you've started the server first time, don't forget to accept the EULA.

Create a launch script

I like to link the latest version of the server to minecraft.jar:

Then, you can reference it in launch.sh with tmux to persist the server even after disconnecting. I like to give Minecraft more memory as well:

We're ready to go!

Follow-up

The next step is creating an appropriate chroot environment to work with Java and Minecraft like what I do with FreeBSD jails. I've had a proper NetBSD chroot exploration post that I've been working on for a while; I'll tidy up and post it soon.
