Minecraft Says "No" To NFTs

Mojang Studios, the makers of the uber-popular Minecraft game, is taking a page from the old U.S. anti-drugs playbook, but it appears "Just Say No" works much better for blockchain-based money making schemes than it ever did for narcotics.

The blog of the studio owned by Microsoft announced on Wednesday that NFTs in Minecraft were "generally not something we will allow and support." The blog also stated that it was changing its Minecraft Usage Guides to clarify that blockchain technology is not allowed to be integrated into the Minecraft client. Furthermore, NFTs made from game content (e.g items, skins and mods) cannot be used to generate NFTs.

The developers noted that blockchain technology's concept of digital ownership is built on "scarcity and exclusion" which "does not match with Minecraft values of inclusion in the creative process and playing with others." They added that third-party NFTs could end in the hands of players who purchase them, because they rely on the creators of blockchain technology "who might disappear without notice."

It actually happened. Blockverse, a NFT project that was said to be designed for Minecraft was a fraud on investors to the amount of $1.2 million. It was sold NFT forms on OpenSeas and other sites. The project also offered $Diamond cryptocurrency. In January, the creators suddenly seized all the money invested and deleted the website, Discord, and Twitter account. If you're not aware this, it's commonly referred to as a "rug pull," and it's much too common in the crypto space.

Although the Minecraft developers left it open for blockchain tech to be added in the near future, they stated that they do not have plans to incorporate blockchain technology in Minecraft right now.

It's likely that some projects that had been working to integrate Minecraft into blockchains were not as enthusiastic about the news. P2PSYS.COM NFT Worlds, a company that uses blockchain to allow users to purchase NFTs for their Minecraft, a digital world, was affected hard. The company posted a Discord message to its Twitter account, stating that they were working on solutions "around the Minecraft EULA changes," adding they were even contemplating a shift to create their own Minecraft-like gaming platform.

Despite the game being nearly 13 years old and 141 million active users remain on Minecraft each month, as of August 2021 data from Statista. Helen Chiang, the Minecraft studio's head, said to Edge Magazine in a 2019 interview that the average age of Minecraft players was 24. Chiang declared that the game was specifically designed to be suitable for children. For Minecraft players, the ERSB rating is 10 years old and over. A money-making investment strategy built into the client does bring up a number of red flags and potential for abuse, particularly when you make children vulnerable. Chiang reported to have told Edge that "We should be very clear and simple around the way we will monetize in the game."

While other games that are designed for children like Roblox have leaned all-in on monetization and promotions in-game targeted at children. Roblux is used to incentivize users to spend Roblux in-game for items, while they visit environments specifically designed to promote brands such as Ralph Lauren, Nike, and Vans. The game's creators revised their community standards in the past year to include a vague reference to NFTs in game. Users, according to the company, are not permitted to make use of Roblox to pay to act as a model for assets.
