Craftbukkit is an external third-party Minecraft mod which allows you to utilize Minecraft plugins. The mod is available for download at Bukkit.org. It's an JAR file that runs the Minecraft server JAR.
After downloading the latest version of Craftbukkit change the name of the downloaded file to craftbukkit.jar. BEAGO You can download the development version or the recommended build. Although recommended builds are more stable, they usually run older versions of Minecraft which users are unable to connect to with their current clients. You shouldn't use the development build unless the recommended build has been updated for the most recent Minecraft version.
Copy the craftbukkit.jar file to the same directory that contains your minecraft_server.jar. This article assumes you already have a functioning Minecraft server, if not check out my article on creating your own Minecraft server.
You can start your Minecraft server in the same way as you normally do however, you must replace minecraft_server.jar with craftbukkit.jar. Craftbukkit is a program that requires more memory, might require you to increase the amount of RAM available to your server. Craftbukkit creates a configuration file called bukkit.yml at the time it starts. Nothing in this file has to be modified and the configuration is fairly basic.
Next is the installation of plugins. The plugins.bukkit.org section of the Bukkit.org website contains all available plugins. You can search for plugins using keywords or sort them by category. Plugins which haven't been updated recently likely won't work with the latest version of Craftbukkit/Minecraft. On the plugin's page, you can download the plugin, access details and documentation and connect with other users.
Installing and downloading a plugin is fairly easy. Craftbukkit will automatically create an JAR file. You'll need to restart your server for this change to take effect. The plugin will also create a folder with the same filename as the JAR file. The folder contains configuration files and other files that are required to use the plugin.
If the download is a zip or rar file you must unzip/unrar this file using a program which can handle these extensions. The files must be transferred to your plugin folder. Make sure that the JAR file is located in the root folder of the plugins folder. The new plugin will be activated once you restart your server.
