Xbox, Sony hackers hit by hack attack

Lizard Squad hacking group was attacked in a scandalous attack that exposed the entire database of users.



The group claimed to have knocked out the Xbox and PlayStation gaming networks offline over the Christmas period.



It soon launched a website that permitted anyone who paid to use its software to flood other websites with data.



The attack that exposed the customer's list is only one of many targeted at the group or its tools.

Investigative journalist Brian Krebs broke the news that the database used to create the Lizard Stresser tool had been compromised. The Stresser allowed those who paid to make use of it to overload websites or shut down users by bombarding the websites they were visiting with data.



Mr Krebs did not specify who accessed the data , but said he'd acquired a dump of the entire list of 14,241 people who signed up.

Anyone visiting the Stresser site was warned about the attack via a message on the main page's login box that urged users to change their passwords that they used when they signed up.



Krebs wrote in a blog post that the Lizard Squad had not taken enough precautions to safeguard the login information and contact details given by users.



"All registered usernames and passwords were kept in plain text," said Mr Krebs and added that only a few hundred of the people who registered paid for the service.



Tech news site Ars Technica also got hold of the database dump which was briefly posted on the Mega file-sharing platform. It said most of those who used it were gamers keen to stop rivals playing a particular game. Minecraft servers were a favorite target of the Stresser users, it said.



Ars Technica said the dump of the database could spell issues for anyone who used it as the IP addresses of many of them were poorly obscured and could, with a little work, be retrieved.



Then, shortly after Lizard Squad was attacked on IRC chat networks Other computer experts also dismantled the tools. One of the hackers leaked the source code for the program used to attack IRC chat network users.



Eric Zhang, a computer science student was able to swiftly list the names of everyone who signed up for Stresser using an extremely simple script.



He said, "That took only 10 minutes."



He also said that he was not surprised that the entire database had been stolen because he checked the website and found that public access to the server behind it was still open.



"If you look at the site , it's clearly managed by someone who doesn't have much formal experience in software engineering," he said.



He said, "Most of their work is not particularly impressive." "Anyone could accomplish it. It's just a matter of time.



Mr Krebs stated that Lizard Squad was being targeted by security professionals who were irritated by their sudden fame.



He added: "There seems to be an overall feeling in the security research community that these guys are in way over their heads, and if we can't find a way to bring justice to a bunch of teenagers from Western nations who are making fun of everyone else and causing a sour situation."



He said that the group was able to survive because of the time it required for investigations to be conducted and the members to be identified. Recent Lizard Squad arrests seemed to only have led to the capture of some of its hangers-on, but left some core members free.
