Microsoft Expands Access to Minecraft: Education Edition and Resources to Support Remote Learning

Many teachers are opting for remote learning to keep their students engaged as COVID-19-related school closures all over the globe. To aid teachers and students in staying connected to the classroom, Minecraft: Education Edition is available now until June 2020 for all learners and educators who have an active Office 365 Education account. Please complete this form to verify your account and request access to Minecraft.

We also have compiled a special Minecraft remote learning toolkit, that includes more than 50 lessons, STEM curriculum , and project-based learning exercises so that teachers can use Minecraft: Education Edition with their students whether they are at home, in school or in a remote learning environment.

Features such as classroom multiplayer allow students to work together on projects within their Minecraft worlds, building plans, planning, and even chatting while they collaborate. Multiplayer Mode can be accessed by downloading this guide. Students can use tools such as the Camera and Book & Quinl to capture screenshots and write about their projects, and export their in-game portfolios to PDF when they are prepared to submit their work.

"Distance learning requires students to be engaged in engaging with content in a variety of ways," explains educator and Minecraft certified trainer Becky Keene. "As they work remotely they must have activities and environments that motivate them to learn. Minecraft can be used to support almost any subject and students can demonstrate their learning without a break!"

When students work remotely in Minecraft: Education Edition, it opens up new opportunities for them to build communication and problem-solving skills. Mark Henkels, a Minecraft educator in New York, says, "It's the social interaction that's an important reason for the reason why Minecraft is so well-known and popular. And that social interaction is the reason why Minecraft is such a a great educational environment."
