So how does Minecraft work, and how safe is it for children? Here's everything you need to know.
Minecraft is an online "sandbox" game. Players build their own virtual worlds and experiences with resources or building blocks. You'll need to move up from the basics of resources to more advanced ones, but you can eventually create your world in any way you like.
While the prices may differ depending on the platform you play on, Minecraft will never cost you more than PS25. The price includes all mods (community-made improvements to the game) and also skins (aesthetic enhancements to characters). It is possible to play on smartphones, computers tablet, XBox, Nintendo Switch or Playstation.
Users can play in a single-player mode or multiplayer mode. In the multiplayer mode players collaborate to build their Minecraft world.

It's very popular due to this.
Minecraft is a game that is free-form. It doesn't come with a list of instructions, or a stated objective players are free to construct and explore as they want. It's often compared to virtual Lego.
This gives Minecraft players the freedom to choose how they play. Users can recreate an existing fantasy world or build a new one from scratch. They can fight against villains and go on adventure, and they can play by themselves or with their friends.
It can also be played at any level. In many popular games, you must have an amount of expertise to move on to the next level. This can be frustrating for young children who don't always have the skills or time to make progress in the game. In Minecraft, children can create their own adventures at any level of play.
What are the things parents should be aware of?
Age restrictions
Different Minecraft versions have different age restrictions. Some mods might contain more violence than others. Keep in mind that Minecraft offers an in-game chat. Age ratings vary from 7+ up to 13+.
Minecraft's standard terms and conditions state that children who are younger than 13 years old must have parental permission to play. Children under 13 years old can play Minecraft in the UK without parental consent. However, it's not illegal.
Minecraft is extremely popular among elementary school kids regardless of the age limit. The game isn't inappropriate for young children.
Chat functions
There are two types of chats in Minecraft: Realms and Server chats. Realm chat is hosted by the game developers, Mojang and moderated by them. Each player can establish a server chat. Usually players will invite friends to join their Minecraft server and join the chat, but some players offer an open invitation, which allows anyone to join.
Inform children about the dangers associated with talking to people they don't know online.
Be aware that users could be chatting via Discord another chat platform with different security settings. Be sure to warn children not to go to other platforms to communicate with people.
Chat features allow children to chat with other children who have similar interests in gaming. But, there's no way to know who these people could be. It is recommended that children not communicate with other players via in-game chat unless they know them.
It's also important that children don't give away any personal information about themselves, or transfer their conversations to other online spaces that might be considered private.
YouTube videos of Minecraft
A lot of Minecraft users watch fan-made YouTube videos to sharpen their skills and master new techniques.
Many of these videos are appropriate for children. Minecraft doesn't have any particularly graphic content, but some of the videos feature spiders, monsters, trolls and zombies, which some children might find frightening. Some of the videos have commentary with profanity or sexual references, and some even discuss or even encourage bullying. Take a look at these videos to determine whether you feel they're suitable.
Minecraft Servers
You can search for 'profanity-free Minecraft servers'. Even then, it's worthwhile to check the videos prior to young children watch them.
You can also activate YouTube's Safety Mode to block age-inappropriate content.
Listen to the Parent Zone's podcast, Tech Shock.
Reporting functions
Currently, Minecraft does not have an immediate "report" function which is why your child needs to be aware when joining an online server. If your child plays with an older age group, they could receive abusive language or comments. However, Minecraft do reserve the right to ban any player if they break the terms and conditions.
You can report individual players by going to Minecraft's help desk and making an official complaint. This is something an adult would rather do, rather than a child. It's a bit complicated.
With certain plugins (add-on software that allows you to customize or extend the game) You can report users who violate the rules of the server to a moderator, who can expel anyone who is disruptive or offensive.
