I'd like pose a question to Shamus Shamus and your readers: what is Minecraft, prior to 1.0/.8/9 actually a game?

Let me explain. IE was used on computers to have fun. What is/was it a gaming program? The thing that makes games, game, at least to my mind, is that they have rules, goals, and structures that enhance the gameplay.

In Terraria, a game that is very similar to Minecraft, it's loot and bosses, along with a far more intricate and intriguing crafting system than minecraft. However, it is more a toy, than it is a game. Toys are more imaginative and often collaborative, and do not have the rules and objectives that make a game, a game.

Let's take a look at a few real life games and toys.

Chess is a game in which you must beat your opponent with superior strategies and capture his King. Each player moves in a way dictated in the rules.

Lego is a toy through which you can create simple structures and let your imagination run wild, your goal is that you create your own.

DnD is a game which you try to live as long as possible, while making money, while also playing a character. It is structured according to clearly defined rules that guide its play. For instance, the d20 roll that determines each and every move in the game.

Barbies and various play figures toys that allow adolescents' fantasies of maturity may be acted upon. There aren't any rules that dictate the actions or a general goal.

Football is a sport in which players attempt to move the ball across a scrimmage line towards a goal located on the opposing side of the field. Each player is assigned a specific position that has specific rules and can be punished if they violate the rules.

My question regarding Minecraft is: Where is the ultimate goal? In Minecraft 1.0, you could beat the dragon. But, before that, where are the real goals of the game beyond what you have set for yourself? Minecraft is more of a tool players turn into a game, rather than it is a real game. Go [direction] is an example. It is the players who are trying to meet their goals of playing the form of a toy, with hardly the fundamental gameplay mechanic.

While you can argue that this is a strength I'm asking for well-thought arguments for why it's a good game. It doesn't matter if it's good or not. It's undisputed that it's a fun toy.

You might argue that Minecraft is a game because of the death mechanic, it's not really a problem because it doesn't have the appropriate gravitas to deal with death in any meaningful way other than teleporting. A similar genre game(pure Sandbox), the Sims, covered death in a manner with more consequences, and when a Sim died, you lost that Sim for the rest of your life. Your aim was to keep Sims alive, and to provide for their needs as long as you could.

Edit: Damn thing was published before I was even ready.

One could argue that survival is the goal of the game. To which I'd say that resources are plentiful and tools are easily accessible, which is why the free resurrection makes it very easy to die. It's almost to the point of it being a nonentity. The player can turn the game off completely to prevent death from any place. This again points to the fact that this is a primarily game created by the player. This is not an actual enforced gaming structure.
