After Minecraft Says No to NFTs, NFT Worlds Pledges to make its own Game

Mojang made waves yesterday by stating in clear and unambiguous terms, that NFTs are not allowed in Minecraft (opens in new tab). This is a great news for gamers , but not so for those who have already committed to using blockchain technology in games-like NFT Worlds.

"NFT Worlds" is a decentralized, fully customizable, community driven play to earn gaming platform where world owners can design their own infinite metaverse games or experiences for players or communities within their worlds," its website (opens in a new tab) says.

"Currently using Minecraft and its vast open-source ecosystem, NFT Worlds builds on the foundation of a decade's worth of open-source development within the Minecraft community and radically extends it to create completely new types of 3D voxel-based, decentralized gaming metaverses that are backed by the Ethereum blockchain."

What that means, in essence is that it can support custom Minecraft servers where players can purchase virtual land parcels and earn (and spend) cryptocurrency. It's the kind of hybrid system that Mojang's blockchain policy seems specifically aimed at shutting down. It certainly had an impact: The price for $WRLD (opens new tab) dropped immediately following the announcement by the studio.

In response to Mojang's latest policy, NFT Worlds has issued an official statement (opens in a new tab) condemning Mojang and Minecraft as having "no respect for creators, builders, and players," and vowing to make its own game to take over the game.

"We're creating a new game and platform that is based on the basic mechanics of Minecraft however, thanks to modernization and continuous development Minecraft has been missing for years," NFT Worlds said. "This is not a rewrite of some open source Minecraft version, which could infringe the EULA or could still be subject to legal action, this is entirely made from scratch. The transition will also be accompanied by a public-facing brand identity that is more friendly to players."

The Future Of NFT Worlds Read our statement below through the attached Twitter thread, or here: https://t.co/w0nf1f2xxnA thread pic.twitter.com/Oy2T7oXQVgJuly 22, 2022

The new game will have an "playstyle as well as a look and feel" similar to Minecraft, NFT Worlds said it will also feature performance optimizations, graphics enhancements, and new mechanisms that will give players "a more accessible, affordable and enjoyable gaming experience." It is free for all players, and "completely free of the policies that Microsoft and Mojang have over Minecraft." BONFIRE However it will be backwards compatible with existing Minecraft server plugins, so when the time comes to change platforms content creators will be capable of making the switch without much fuss and effort.

Making an improved Minecraft than Minecraft (while keeping compatibility with Minecraft) is an awfully huge undertaking and one that I think would invite some immediate and rigorous examination from Microsoft however, NFT Worlds doesn't have many alternatives. Mojang has effectively closed the door on its business model, but a wholesale change to a different game would leave the existing users and everything they've created so far, in the cold. The only way to keep the wheels spinning is to come up with something that is functionally Minecraft without actually being Minecraft. It's a big task.

NFT Worlds stated that it will make changes in its launcher and play pages to attract new players who are not interested in the cryptocurrency aspect. It also highlighted some crucial, high-risk stakes for NFT Worlds future as a battle for both the philosophical and technological spirit of the internet.

NFT Worlds stated that Microsoft has clarified that they will always be in the best interests of their shareholders and balance sheets to the detriment the player experience, innovation and creators. "We believe an open, free, and a more evolved version of Minecraft that Minecraft brought to the world can be the best option for creators, developers and ultimately gamers.

"We fight to ensure that every participant benefits from the ecosystem's contributions. We realize this is a monumental task."

I've reached out to Microsoft for comment on the NFT Worlds plan and will update when I get any response.
