Calls Grow for TikTok to be Banned over Chinese Spying Fears

Australians are being advised to remove TikTok from their phones after a new report by cyber security experts discovered that sensitive information is being transferred back to China.

Security firm Internet 2.0 cracked the source code for the popular video sharing platform, which is downloaded by more than 7.5million Aussies - to uncover the ways in which data is being targeted without the user being aware.

The Beijing-backed app scans the device's hard drive and taps into calendars of phone numbers and contact lists to look for any other apps.

TikTok also monitors the device's location at least once an hour and will continue to search for data from contacts even if permission is denied, according to the report.

Primarily used by youngsters under the age of 18 years old, the platform that beat Google to become the world's most popular website in 2021, largely consists of dance videos of a short duration and is generally considered harmless.

However, TikTok, a communist superpower, is a world leader in data collection, AI, and facial recognition software. There are concerns that Beijing may be using TikTok to spy on western young people.

Robert Potter Internet 2.0 CEO accused TikTok and its parent company ByteDance of being deceptive.

Their source code is in contradiction with their public statements on how their app functions according to the Nine network.

TikTok says all user data for the region is stored in Singapore and is only accessible by a the few users who require it to operate the site.

The IP address is located located in Singapore The network traffic does not leave Singapore and it is utterly false to imply there is communication with China,' the company said in an announcement.

However, Mr. Potter stated that his team identified that on Apple smartphones, the app was connecting to servers in China but they could not say what data was being transmitted.

He also said that there were significant traffic flows to servers in China.

Internet 2.0 stated that TikTok did not disclose the information it sought or where it went in the report, which was distributed to Australian politicians as well as US politicians.

The Beijing-backed app scans the device's hard drive and taps into users contacts and calendars on their phones list to monitor any other apps that may have been installed.

The report said that "During the analysis, we were unable to be able to determine with certainty where the connection originated or the purpose of it,"

'The China server connection is managed by Guizhou Baishan Cloud Technology, an enterprise that offers cybersecurity and cloud services.

"The subdomain connected with the China server connection was resolved in multiple locations around world, including China.

TikTok also demanded access to storage on external servers in a way that was deemed to be 'excessive'.

'This is a standard procedure for a social media application to save images and videos according to the report.

"The most important thing that we consider excessive is that TikTok doesn’t just provide the ability to see folders but also retrieves a list of all the items that are stored in the external storage folder.

According to the report, the app collected more information than it needed in order to function properly.

'The TikTok mobile app has been designed with a culture that doesn't regard privacy as a fundamental principle, since the majority of permissions and device information that are collected are not required for the application to perform according to the report.

TikTok stated that the data it gathers is in line with industry norms and is securely encrypted.

Mr. Potter said that because the company is based in China it is governed by Chinese laws and could be required to provide any data requested by the Communist Party.

He stated that since it is a Chinese company that it is controlled by Chinese law first. This means that it operates in a completely different privacy environment.

Chinese law requires individuals and organisations to'support, assist and assist the state intelligence task'.

TikTok employees have stated that they will not share information with China's government, and have not been asked for permission to do so.

James Paterson, a Liberal Senator, has called on the government to block the app.

It was enough of a concern to find out that user data is being accessed in mainland China the country, said Mr Paterson said.

"It is alarming to know the amount of data taken from TikTok users and how much of it is not needed.

It's difficult to think of an unintentional reason why so much data is being collected especially when it is available by the Chinese government.'

"The Albanese government must stop sitting on its laurels and act to protect Australians cybersecurity and privacy.'

Information sharing through TikTok can be restricted through phone settings and is more restricted on PCs.

Liberal Senator James Paterson (pictured) has expressed alarm at TikTok's collection of data as well as its potential use by China

However, some experts say the only sure method to stop the app collecting information is to get rid off it.

Vanessa Teague, an ANU data encryption expert, said that the app could collect information on payment and financial information, photos and videos messages, audio and sound recordings, and web browsing history.

If videos were tagged using GPS coordinates, blocking location information to an app will not work.

Dr Teague provided some very practical tips for those who are concerned about privacy.

"Delete the app," she told SBS.

"TikTok isn't as transparent ... than Facebook [and] is likely to come under less scrutiny (as it's) located in a less democratic state.'

Daily Mail Australia has reached out to TikTok for more details.
