Minecraft meet-up in Peterborough described as 'awful'
14 September 2015
Angry parents of Minecraft gamers have taken to social media to voice their displeasure about "awful" queues and a lack of activities to do at an unofficial convention.
Around 4,100 people took part in MineVention at the Peterborough Arena on Saturday to meet the stars and take part in games.
But many people have stated that they waited in line for hours to see idols and eat food and are demanding refunds.
Organiser Lisa O'Brien said the queues were long, and she would issue a statement regarding refunds in the near future.
The event, which isn't associated or endorsed by Minecraft developer Mojang began in Ireland, and this was the first time it took place in the UK.
TV presenter
Fans of Minecraft, the global gaming phenomenon, had the chance to meet "Youtubers" and take pictures, and play games.
The event, which featured TV's Gadget Show presenter Jason Bradbury, also encouraged fans to dress as the game's character Steve to try to break a world record.
However, it was criticized on social media for long lines, a lack of food and stalls selling merchandise, and other issues.
Vicky Abraham shared on Facebook that she had waited with her son of five years for more than an hour and only 30 seconds on a computer.
Another parent reported waiting 45 minutes for water bottles, saying the event was "appalling" with "naff-all to do". Another parent contacted the BBC to inform them that they left after 30 minutes due to the long lines and that her son was "crying throughout the journey home".
A few people have posted on Facebook that they were satisfied with the event. One of them said: "I thought your event was great for PS15."
Lisa O'Brien of O'Brien Event Management said that she sympathized with parents because we all have kids. Due to the huge number of people who showed at the event instead of buying tickets in advance, lines were 45 minutes long, she said.
She claimed that the convention had never been done to this scale before, and some official merchandise was not delivered in time for the event.
She added that organizers had "taken into consideration all comments, suggestions" and would be meeting to address any issues. A further statement would be made on Monday night.
