Minecraft And NFTs

Recently, we've received feedback from our community members inquiring for clarification and more transparency regarding Mojang Studios and Minecraft's position on NFTs (non-fungible tokens) and blockchain.

We are currently updating our Minecraft Usage Guides to provide more in-depth information on the latest technologies. However, we want to express our opinion that NFT integrations into Minecraft are not something we would recommend or allow. Let's take a closer look!

WHAT IS AN NFT?

An NFT is a unique, non-editable, digital token that is part of a blockchain , and is often purchased with cryptocurrencies like Bitcoin. An NFT can be associated to any digital asset like an MPEG or GIF. However, digital art such as JPEGs are the most common usage case for this token. An NFT is the token that identifies the owner of the original digital file. However any digital file can be copied and moved or deleted. Blockchain and NFTs have also been associated with speculation, in which prices rise rapidly and as we have recently seen, may fall rapidly.

HOW DOES THIS AFFECT ME

If you're a creator who is actively involved in the selling, buying, or trading of NFTs that make use of Minecraft (like skins or worlds), we strongly suggest you go through the information below. If you don't, these changes will not be a problem for you.

OUR POLICY ON NFTs and MINECRAFT

Our Minecraft Usage Guidelines outline how a server owner may charge for access and how every player should have the same capabilities. These rules are in place to ensure that Minecraft remains an open community that grants everyone access to the same content. minecraft NFTs can, however, create exclusion and scarcity models which are not in line with our Guidelines and the spirit and purpose of Minecraft.

Blockchain technologies are not allowed to be integrated into our client and server apps. Additionally, blockchain technology cannot be integrated into Minecraft in-game content like worlds, skins and other items be utilized by blockchain technology to create a precious digital asset. Our reasons follow.

NFT implementations have been introduced by a few companies and can be connected to Minecraft world skin pack and files. NFTs and blockchain can also be used with Minecraft to create Minecraft collectible NFTs. This allows players to earn NFTs by performing activities on a server, or by earning Minecraft NFT rewards.

Each of these uses of NFTs and other blockchain technologies results in digital ownership based on scarcity and exclusion, which does not align with Minecraft values of creativity and playing with others. NFTs are not inclusive of all our community and create a scenario of the haves and the have-nots. The investment and speculation mindset associated with NFTs diverts attention from the game itself and encourages profiteering, which we think is inconsistent with the long-term enjoyment and success of our players.

We are also concerned about third-party NFTs not being reliable and could result in a cost to those who purchase them. Certain third-party NFT implementations are also entirely dependent on blockchain technology and could require an asset manager who might disappear without notice. There have also been instances where NFTs were sold at fraudulent or artificially price increases. We recognize that creation inside our game is of great value and we aim to create a market where those values are acknowledged.

In order to ensure that Minecraft players enjoy a secure and enjoyable experience, blockchain technologies are not permitted to be integrated inside our Minecraft client and server applications. Nor can be used to create NFTs for any game content, including skins, worlds, items, or other mods. We will also monitor how blockchain technology develops over time to make sure that the above principles are not infringed upon and to determine if it will provide more secure gaming experiences or other inclusive, practical applications in gaming. We do not plan to implement blockchain technology in Minecraft at the moment.

We'll be providing more details to you in the near future. You can read our guidelines here However, in the meantime, we hope to have more information to share with you. Stay tuned!
