Minecraft is definitely available for Mac! It is evident when you visit the Minecraft download page, and under the "Desktop" section, choose "Mac".

Although there are version differences between the desktop version of Minecraft and the iPad version (which is known as Minecraft Pocket Edition), the core game is the same. Multiplayer is definitely available for the desktop version of the game.
It is important to note that your grandson's account will require an account on Minecraft account to access the desktop version (I'm not certain how Pocket Edition works, nor if you are able to use the same account information for both versions).
He would like to play the same multiplayer game on the iMAC

Minecraft (the Java version) does not run on Macs or older versions of Windows. It is only compatible with PC's. - Win10 ("Minecraft Windows 10 Beta Edition") is "cross platform". It is compatible with Windows 10 smartphones, tablets as well as PCs. Win10 is compatible with PE. PE runs on Android and iOS tablets and smartphones.
Consoles (like the Java version), are unique animals and can only play with themselves... Xbox (and PS4 and Wii U) can't play with other versions because of different world sizes and other limitations. (in fact Xbox 360's won't be able to play with Xbox Ones). Until, and unless, the (newer) consoles get infinite worlds they can't play with any of the other versions.
The multiplayer will be distinct (independent of the Pocket Edition). Pocket Edition players will not be able to join people on Macs which makes the multiplayer entirely separate.
