New Minecraft Skins With Default Minecraft Skins Bring Back Steve's Beard

Mojang has changed the default Minecraft skins to Steve and Alex - and Minecraft Steve's beard is back after years sporting a clean-shaven look. The iconic blue-shirted face of the game of crafting, Minecraft Steve's first avatar had a brown goatee - which many players mistook for smiling smiles - however, it was removed to create a gender-neutral appearance for the sandbox game's default character.



Minecraft Alex was released in 2014 as an default skin. Featuring a green top and a longer red hair tied into ponytails, Alex offers a slightly more feminine style than Steve's model. Microsoft Studio head of Minecraft Helen Chiang said in a 2018 interview that the company wanted the Minecraft brand to challenge gender stereotypes and present Alex and Steve as having similar physical characteristics and capabilities.



With the two options available and two options available, it was decided to bring back Steve’s famous goatee. The new skins were highlighted in an Minecraft subreddit thread. They also enhance Alex's shading, which gives the second character model a more natural, three-dimensional appearance. The reaction has been overwhelmingly positive, with many fans thrilled to see Steve's beard back.



Many of the commenters have said that they're happy that Steve is now back to the look given in most official artwork - including the character's appearance in Nintendo brawler Super Smash Bros Ultimate. "I understand why they originally took it off," says the most liked comment on the Reddit thread at the time of writing, "but it was clearly an important part of Steve's design, and it seems that Mojang also agrees. It is great to see it come back after many years.



Minecraft lead artist Jasper Boerstra took to Twitter to express his opinion on the new skin and stated, "I'm happy you like the beard's return!" Boerstra also notes that classic banding and 'pillow ' shading techniques are utilized in the new skins "to give a touch of the OG look," but asks players for their thoughts on whether this is an appropriate choice or not.
