Minecraft will Require a microsoft Account to Play By 2022.

Minecraft players have been able to play without having a Microsoft account for the last six years that Microsoft has owned the game however, that will be changed in 2021, the official Minecraft blog announced yesterday. Players who own the original version of Minecraft and don't change to a Microsoft account will not be able to play.

Since its release in 2011 on consoles, the game has been released in two distinct versions. The first version of Minecraft: Java Edition had used Mojang accounts. Minecraft: Bedrock Edition was the name of the console and Windows Store version of the game. With this change the accounts will remain identical, however there's no crossplay, and you'll be unable to play with your friends using the other version of the game.
Farming is a profession of hope

Mojang claims that players who transfer their Mojang accounts will not lose any data. The new accounts will feature two-factor authentication (2FA) as well as additional safety features previously offered in the Bedrock Edition. These include parental controls as well as the ability to to block invites and chats. This is a problem for younger players using multiplayer servers.

Players will be notified in batches over the next months on how to migrate and will also receive a notification on their profile page when they're able to create a new account. Alongside the blog post, Mojang created a video to explain the transition and preempt player complaints:

Anyone concerned should be aware that the video is reassuring regarding compatibility between user-generated content (and multiplayer) However, it makes big assumptions about how you'll feel. The video doesn't address something that could cause concern for users usernames for Java Edition could change.

Mojang has made it clear in support articles that the change does not affect your username. However in the event that you are using your username as a Gamertag, you will need to accept the addition a suffix at its end (e.g. Minecraftfan #1734 ) or a new one. Names that don't meet Microsoft's safety guidelines may also need to be changed. The added suffix might be more popular as there's likely less names to pick from, particularly given the eight years console players have had to snap them up.

Mojang claims that it was easier to utilize Microsoft accounts than to create these new features from scratch. But if they are so crucial then why did it take so long to get them? Two-factor authentication is a request from players for as long as the game offered a place to sell and buy content. It's been around for three years if you count. The protection of your virtual objects from theft appears to be an adequate reason to trigger an update however, it hasn't happened until recently. I'm left to think that this might be an issue that Microsoft forced, making it easier to manage the management of their largest game before the release of next-generation consoles.

While not as explosive as Facebook's decision to require Facebook accounts to utilize Oculus headsets for Minecraft, it is still an enormous game and a lot of players will have to act in order to continue to play.

Correction The earlier version of this article stated that usernames would have to be changed if the same name was used previously as a Gamertag. A change to Microsoft's account system in 2013 means that identical names are now given suffixes to differentiate them from one another, rather than users being required to change to a different name. We regret this mistake.
