Yes, there were many who were using Zoom to attend weddings in COVID-19, but what about having the entire wedding take place in the metaverse - an immersive virtual world - with each guest being an avatar? It turns out that it is already possible.

Article content The reaction to the idea has been mixed. Some were thrilled , while others were skeptical. Others said that similar events have taken place on other platforms for years however with better graphics.

It's difficult to imagine anything worse. I don't think there's anything better than watching cartoons of people during a conference call. Call it what you want.

The New York Times reported that Traci and Dave Gagnon got married in the metaverse on the labor day weekend. The couple had an in-person wedding at a golf course in New Hampshire, but also had one in the virtual realm at the same time to accommodate family and friends who couldn't make it. Instead of a video call, the couple opted to have the whole thing unfold in a virtual setting, with images from the live wedding broadcast mirrored in the virtual version.

Jezebel immediately reacted to the story, declaring in a headline: "The Metaverse may be the most horrible thing that could ever happen to weddings." The article also pointed out that this can make it difficult to graciously decline an invitation to a wedding.

Article content On Twitter there were many users who disagreed that this was something new.

"This was happening 20 years ago, so why is it so unique now?" one user wrote.

Others said the graphics in games such as Second Life and World of Warcraft were better than 15 years ago.

Another Twitter user wrote "Really difficult for me to think of anything worse, any I'd rather do than watch cartoons of people are talking to on conference calls." "Call it whatever you want."

Some were thrilled by the idea. "A new form of wedding! Could you have ever imagined a wedding like this before? The possibilities just keep expanding," one wrote. Another thought was of the possibility of a metaverse wedding right the middle of the Eiffel Tower.

The Gagnons explained that having their wedding in the metaverse meant that guests could attend who might not have been able to attend in person. Traci's maid of honour was able to walk Traci down the aisle. Dave's friend could also make his toast, even though he wasn't able to attend due to his wife's medical conditions.

The metaverse that hosted the wedding was designed by Virbela, a company which according on its website, "builds 3D immersive worlds for events and work learning." It is compatible with most computers and does not require a VR headset.

Gamers were not thrilled with the result.

"Graphically, Metaverse looks about the similar to a PlayStation 1" says an article on dexerto.com. It is a gaming news website.

Article content Many Twitter users shared photos of weddings that took place years ago in the online multiplayer role-playing game Final Fantasy XIV. "Look at how nice it appears," one wrote.

The Gagnons decided to hold their wedding in the metaverse since their avatars have been in contact before they had met in person. According to The New York Times interview the couple's avatars bonded at a Las Vegas company event in 2015, while both were employed by eXp Realty, a company which is expanding into virtual work and the metaverse.

Man, I attended an event in FF14 two weeks ago and it looked more elegant than this pic.twitter.
