Mojang's putting its blocky foot down when it comes to brands and Minecraft. In an open letter to the community on its site, Owen Hill, the company's director of creative communications, laid out new guidelines targeted towards ad agencies, businesses, and all other non-gamer-related entities seeking to make use of Minecraft's vast user base.
For an idea of just how large that base is, think about the fact that in 2014 the creator Markus "Notch" Persson revealed that the PC version had more than 100 million registered users. It's understandable that having a user base that vast could be a tempting incentive for companies looking to promote their totally unrelated wares to the community. The new guidelines for building promotion say that it's not allowed to construct servers or maps to promote products that are not related in a playable forms. What is this? You can now put an end to awkward promotions like CaptainSparklez's gigantic-sized, working cellphone or Disney's request for a map for Tomorrowland to promote the film. Mojang allows you to do these things on your own schedule and budget if a huge fan.
