How an Aussie Dad Stopped his Children from Spending all Day on The Computer

A father managed to get his children off their screens and out cleaning up parks and beaches in a move that 'immediately increased their 'activity and engaged'.

Jon Owen, 47-year-old father of Sydney The idea came to him while watching a nature documentary together with his two children Molly 10 and Eve 8.

He started by taking his kids and their friends to the beach, where they would take on different projects.

The kids went to Bondi one day and picked up trash from the basketball courts.

"They were so excited, it got fierce, with the goal of seeing who could win the most, and they had a lot of fun,' Mr Owen said to Daily Mail Australia.

Mr. Owen stated that his children, Eve, 8 (pictured at Bondi's basketball courts) and Molly (10 (pictured second from right), are'so excited about the projects that he has given them.

The app takes kids on real-world challenges, such as gardening and creating Frog hotels, worm farms and bird boxes

The dad of two said he saw the difference in his kids 'absolutely immediately' when he started giving them mini-projects

Mr Owen also gave the kids tasks like making a meal from leftovers, and creating crafts with old clothes.

He noticed positive changes in his children's behavior 'absolutely instantly'. This was in addition to the enjoyment benefits of teaching responsibility and making children more aware of their environment.

Jon Owen (pictured) stated that he wants to make it fun for kids to learn how to live in a sustainable way.

Mr Owen decided to invest in enabling Aussie primary school kids to have the same experiences.

Genus was founded by him in collaboration with other entrepreneurs. The tech startup developed an app that 'empowers children to undertake real-world missions and learn valuable life skills.

The Genus app has been tested in over 40 schools across Australia. It can be used as a launching point for students to begin environmental projects.

Some of these include making worm farms, frog hotels and bird boxes, as well as doing arts and crafts with the app demonstrating to how to make it.

When the'mission' has been completed, the participants upload their photos to the app before going to the next step.

Mr. Owen conceived the app as an eco-friendly and educational alternative to the popular games that kids are immersed in, such as Minecraft and Fortnite.

It also includes quizzes and word searches with environmental themes, as well as lessons where students apply math to determine the amount of soft plastic they can save from landfill.

Mr Owen said it's all about taking children on a journey of fun that has a real tangible benefit.

"Saving the planet has always been seen as boring and difficult... Genus is making sustainability a fun activity for children,' Mr Owen said.

Owen acknowledges that children today are growing up in the digital age. But, it's crucial to maintain a healthy equilibrium that encourages children to be more active and to get dirty.

The app is free for schools, but after 2023 it will cost students two dollars a year.

Genus's aim is to employ technology in solving real-world problems. The app will be crowdfunded to help fund its development.
