There will be an Appeals Procedure

The new system allows players to report chat messages in multiplayer games However, the community is worried about the implications.

Mojang's community manager said that the company is not going to alter its controversial player reporting feature and demanded the end of harassment of Mojang employees.

Posting on Reddit, MojangMeesh clarified that while the company appreciates feedback from its players, it doesn't necessarily "change the design principles Mojang Studios adheres to-this includes the new reporting system". They also requested that angry players to cease "following Mojang employees around here on Reddit" to make them feel harassed in threads that aren't related to their work. At the time when this article was written, the post was receiving close to 2000 downvotes.

Minecraft players have been up in arms about the new player reporting system since it was announced just a month ago and was then implemented as part of yesterday's 1.19.1 update. It allows players on private and Mojang-hosted multiplayer servers to flag inappropriate chat messages in chat to be reviewed by Mojang investigators, which could result in bans and suspensions for those who do not adhere to Minecraft's rules for community participation, even on servers hosted by self-hosted players. Some players are concerned that the system could result in bans for players who have posted messages that were taken out of context, and more generally, it gives Microsoft too many power to dictate the content on its platform.

I don't believe that their argument is deficient even if a few players are displaying a terrible attitude about it. It's difficult to imagine a scenario in which this system doesn't ban anyone for making jokes between friends. There is an appeals procedure however it's also true that there are a lot of misconceptions flying around about how the system actually works. Scroll through any thread on the matter and it won't take long before you'll see people complaining about having their private server's chat being'monitored by Microsoft, or worried that they'll be banned for cursing. Both are possible according to Mojang's own FAQ on the reporting system.

This is the area where Mojang is stuck. A thread by Stuart Duncan-who manages a Minecraft server for children with autism-shows just how much awful stuff Minecraft hosts regularly. Duncan showcases studies and reports from the ADL and the BBC and other sources that tell stories of racists and predators using Minecraft in a way that is abominable. It is important to offer tools to fight this behavior. While it's true that 'think of the child" and other scary stories are often used to justify reactionary policies in real life and a tool that allows users to report chat messages that aren't legitimate in Minecraft isn't exactly the end of a draconian wedge.

If you say "no one has asked" for this, "the entire community hates this" or "no-one needs this" Please stop trying to be an advocate for everyone. "If you are worried about exploits, that is excellent. I'm too. I'm aware that it's not perfect. But real people can be saved by this.Always remember that.July 27 2022

In other Minecraft news, Mojang recently announced that the game will not include NFTs because they're at odds with its "values of creative inclusion". It's true that the move seemed to garner an enthusiastic response from the player base however there's no information yet about what the AI they've developed to play Minecraft thinks about it.
