A Computer Server is Haunted Clinton 2022. Now it May be Trump's Turn

Content of the article WASHINGTON - As the presidential candidate, Donald Trump repeatedly attacked his Democratic rival Hillary Clinton in 2016 over her use of a private computer server to store official emails when she was U.S. secretary of state.

The Republican president is facing a server problem in his bid to elect himself to the White House in 2020.

In 2016, Clinton was haunted by a computer server. Now it could be Trump's turn. video

A whistleblower's complaint that has led the U.S. House of Representatives to initiate an Trump impeachment investigation accuses White House officials of trying to hide "politically sensitive" information regarding Trump's July 25 call with Ukrainian President Voldymyr Zelenskiy by transferring it to one of the most sensitive government computer systems.

Article content The whistleblower in the complaint, which was made public on Thursday, stated that White House lawyers directed officials to remove the summary of calls from the classified computer system, or server, on which the administration typically stores these records to try to "lock down" access to the information.

Transcripts of presidents' phone calls are typically stored on classified White House computer system accessible to "at the very least, a double-digit number of people," said Larry Pfeiffer, director of the Michael V. Hayden Center for Intelligence, Policy and International Security in Virginia.

He added that moving the transcript to a more restrictive system, which is typically used to store information on highly sensitive government secrets, would be "unusual" given the contents of the call.

Content of the article The White House did not respond to an inquiry for comment on this story. Reuters could not confirm the claims about the server.

ABUSE OF PERSONAL GAIN

According to the complaint, White House officials claimed that they were discussing how to secure the call's contents "because of the possibility, according to the retellings of officials, that the President had used his position to gain personal advantage."

In the wake of pressure after the whistleblower's story was reported in the media the White House on Wednesday released the summary of the call. The House Intelligence Committee demanded the complaint, and on Thursday, released it to the public.

The whistleblower's accusation opens up an attack line by his political opponents on the campaign trail.

Content of the article Trump hammered Clinton during the 2016 campaign for her use of a private server to store sensitive government emails. The FBI investigated Clinton's handling of classified material and recommended that she not be charged with a crime, even the fact that classified information was contained in the emails she wrote or received.

Clinton has denied having received or sending classified information via her unsecure private email account. A Clinton spokesperson did not respond to a request to comment on Thursday.

TRUMP: 'PARTISAN HACK JOB'

Trump has dismissed the whistleblower's complaint and called it an "partisan hack job".

Intelligence Community Inspector General Michael Atkinson told Acting Director of National Intelligence Joseph Maguire in August that his review had found signs "of an arguable bias towards politics" by the whistleblower, but concluded after a brief examination that the information was urgent and credible.

Article content The complaint said White House officials had told the whistleblower that it was "not the first time" Trump's aides transferred the transcript of one of his conversations to the more restricted computer system "for the purpose of safeguarding sensitive to the political sphere, not sensitive national security information."

"One White House official described the call as an infringement of the electronic system because the call did not contain any information that could be considered sensitive from a national security perspective," the whistleblower wrote in the complaint of nine pages.
