Default skins[]

In Java Edition pre-Classic Steve was first seen in a cyan-colored shirt along with blue pants, and gray shoes. He was initially the face of the human mob. Later in Java Edition Classic, Steve's appearance was changed to include no beard. Despite this, Steve still maintained the beard on a variety of merchandise, marketing materials and official artwork.

Alex was introduced in Java Edition 1.1.8-pre1 and was the default skin model for slim arms.

2022. Trailers and artwork for The Wild Update showed Sunny, Noor and Efe. However, they were not named and were not officially available in the game at that time.

On August 20, 2022, Minecraft Now announced seven new default skins. The seven new default skins were announced during Minecraft Live 2022, three of which were new characters from The Wild Update trailers. The names of the skins were announced in an Minecraft Live 2022 Recap article. The new skins were made available to players on the 20th of October, 2022. They are accessible through the Skins tab of the launcher, or by using the character creator on the bedrock edition.

Properties[]

Skins are divided into areas that function as the surface area of the character (for example, the front head area, left leg area, etc.). There are 3,264 pixels that can be customized, with 1,632 pixels on each layer. The second layer can be used to give the character glasses, hats, or other accessories (even the head is bigger).

In Java Edition, skins can only be the use of a solid color. Transparency is not allowed in the skin file, except for the second layer, which is transparent by default; playing offline, pixels can be left unlocked, resulting in "holes" in the skin. If a skin with transparent pixels on the first layer is uploaded the transparent pixels will render as black pixels in game.

In Bedrock Edition, skins can have double the resolution of a normal skin. This means that the skin template can be as big as 128x128 and not 64x64. The same templates apply like before, but the players have four times more pixels to work with as both dimensions were increased by a factor of four. Transparency can be used even on the first layer, though there must be at minimum one visible pixel so a fully invisible skin isn't possible. Transparency must be at least 100% or 0%, as translucent colors are not allowed on any layer.

The pixel size of the 2nd layer (Hat layer) on the body, arms and legs is 0.25 pixels more than the skin pixel. For head 2nd layer (Hat layer) it is 0.5 pixels bigger than the skin layer (inner layer).

World textures []

Skins can also refer to other textures within the game such as block textures and item sprites. You can find a list of all these here.

It is important to note that zombies and their variants can be outfitted with normal player skins (and vice versa). Skeleton mobs may use typical player skins as well but remember that they sport skinny arms and legs. Skeleton mob skins can be used as skins for players. Their arms and legs will not appear thin if they are.

In order to utilize the player skin for zombies, the user needs to align it in the proper location on the .png to ensure that there is no visual break in the texture.

Changing or installing player skins[]

Java Edition[]

Only players who have purchased

Minecraft

The user can alter their character's skin. This can be done on the profile page, or in the

Minecraft Launcher

by uploading an appropriate .png texture that is 64x64 pixels, or a texture from the past that is 64x32 pixels which then replaces the default skin.

Skins can also be set to feature either 4 or 3 pixels wide arms. These options can be changed on the profile page. [1]

The steve.png and alex.png files in client.jar can be modified and replaced via the resource pack, however the changes are only visible to players using the resource pack, and affects all players who use the default skin.

Other versions of Steve and Alex in skin packs that have been released officially and other Minecraft media are available:

Bedrock Edition []

Pocket Edition v0.11.0 beta allows players to choose from either Steve or Alex default skins, and they can also apply their own skins. The Java edition follows the same format. The player must select an acceptable skin image from their photo library and must choose one of the most popular models. The players can also use Minecraft Coins to buy skin packs. The Legacy Skin Pack was also implemented in Bedrock Edition, but the player has to sign in to Xbox Live to access all the skins. It also comes with five anonymous skins. The players can also create their own skin packs which should include an manifest.json file, an skins.json file as well as all the desired skins. To display names of skins it is necessary to add an additional.lang file can also be added to a folder labeled with a text. However, the game can register skins without it.

Creator of characters[]

The menu for creating characters.

The character creator is a feature available in Bedrock Edition (and was in Minecraft Earth until its discontinuation) that lets players customize their skins with cosmetic items that are free or paid for. You can access it by clicking the profile button on the main menu. It can be used to equip capes. Many clothes cost Minecoins (Tokens on PlayStation 4), or can be earned through accomplishing certain tasks.

Skin packs []

As downloadable content Skin Packs are also available in Bedrock Edition. You can purchase Skin Packs:

Through the Marketplace. A lot of them cost Minecoins (Tokens for PS4) however some are free. - through .mcskin files put in the skin_packs or development_skin_packs folder in the game files (accessible only on Windows 10, Android, iOS, iPadOS, and Fire devices).

Java Edition Skin Packs[]

The following skin packs were made available on minecraft.net by Mojang Studios for certain events.

There could be additional Java Edition exclusive skin packs released by Mojang Studios not yet listed in this table.

Templates[]

Many players prefer to have their own distinctive skin. Many players prefer making their own skins, even though there are a lot of pre-made skins available online.

A custom skin allows you to personalize your player model. You can either use one of the many community-made skin editors or modify the steve.png and alex.png files manually using an image editor like Photoshop, GIMP or Paint.net. You can download the steve.png and alex.png files here. Editing the alex.png or steve.png files manually requires that you keep the original image dimensions and that the background (the unused pixels of the skin) is transparent. If not, Minecraft may fail to recognize the skin in the way it was intended.

Some may find it easier to use a software, either downloadable or in-browser that provides a live perspective of their character's the 3D model as they edit the skin. For instance, software can help users by providing them with various pre-made selections (such as sweaters, boots, hats, etc. Be Yourself; Everyone Else Is Already Taken Even even if the creator's not an artist, they can give the skin creator exactly the look they desire.

After making a custom skin, either through a skin editor or by editing the steve.png file directly, one still needs to upload the .png file to the Skin section of the Profile page on Minecraft.net (found here) before the skin is put on. Other players in multiplayer can also see the skin. Be aware that players will not view the customized skin in the event that they aren't connected to the internet or playing offline.

The current templates can be used with old (pre-Java Edition 1.8) skins on the skin server, however only the top portion of the image is used. This means that only the top portion of the image is used, and not the individual arms and legs on the bottom. There is no overlay on any other layer than the head. The Java Edition 1.7 skin is to be used exactly as it is.
