Why Silicon Valley is betting on making this dystopian sci-fi fantasy into a reality



Fortnite is trying to be more than a video game. This is the latest example of Fortnite adding experiences to its gameplay. It hosted performances by Marshmello, Travis Scott, and three films by Christopher Nolan last year.



The original concept of the metaverse was that it would be utilized in dystopian science fiction novels in which virtual worlds provide an escape from the deteriorating society and were created for fictional characters, the tech industry has created a more positive image of the concept. The idea is to create a world like the internet, but one that users (via digital avatars) can explore of and where they can communicate with one another in real-time.



Epic Games CEO Tim Sweeney was extremely proud to announce Fortnite in a metaverse and as a "social event" when he was a witness in the famous lawsuit against Apple that he filed earlier this year. The lawsuit was over the commissions that the iPhone maker collects from developers of apps. Sweeney's argument was intended to support Epic's claim that Fortnite is more than just a game. It also challenged Apple's claim that Fortnite is not a monopoly, as Fortnite users can play it on other devices than iPhones or iPads.



Epic, on its part, tried to present itself as one of the millions of apps on Apple's App Store that are subject to Apple's excessive restrictions and commissions on in-app purchases. (A verdict in the case is pending.)



Fortnite isn't the only one that heavily depends on the idea of metaverse.



One of the most notable examples is Roblox, which features games-within-a-game made by users. It has also expanded into television shows and concerts in recent months. Minecraft is owned by Microsoft (MSFT) has also been working on expanding its own metaverse, with the organization Reporters Without Borders recently creating a virtual library within the game featuring articles that have been censored across the globe.

Big Tech is also more open to the metaverse. The word was mentioned almost two dozen times during Facebook's recent earnings call. As it seeks to go beyond the traditional video call the social media company has been using virtual reality features and services for a long time.



For many reasons, the metaverse's full-fledged development is likely to take a long time before it becomes feasible. However, the gaming industry is leading the charge.
