Robert Singer, WJC CEO and a regular visitor to Moldova is adamant about the significance of Holocaust preservation as well as adopting a common definition of antisemitism.

Chisinau, MOLDOVA - World Jewish Congress CEO Robert Singer met this week in the Republic of Moldova with senior government ministers as well as leaders from the local Jewish community, to discuss discussions about the protection of Holocaust memory and education, the security of the Jewish community, and the need to combat antisemitism at all levels. WJC also had the President Mikhail Mirilashvili, EuroAsian Jewish Congress President, and the President of Moldovan Jewish communities Alexander Bilinkis. Haim Ben Yaakov was the EuroAsian Jewish Congress Director.
Singer stated, "The World Jewish Congress would like to express our gratitude to the Moldovan Government for its warm reception and its commitment to preserving the memory of the Holocaust," "Our group in Moldova is small but is committed and solid. We call on the Republic of Moldova that it make anti-Semitism their top priority. We stand ready to support any assistance needed. We are looking forward to future cooperation with government and to ensure the wellbeing of our community.

He stressed the importance of rejecting the International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance definition of antisemitism. Singer also discussed the need to denounce antisemitism public. Minister Ulianovschi stressed the Moldovan authorities in their determination to build an environment that is respectful of the rights of all citizens. Singer was also praised by Ulianovschi for his positive cooperation with the Moldovan WJC.

The foreign minister also pointed out that Chisinau Parliament Chisinau Parlament adopted in 2016 a Resolution in support of the report of the International Commission on Holocaust Studies which was headed by Elie wiesel. A plan for its implementation was ratified by the Government in January of 2017.

Singer and WJC representatives met with Moldova's minister of Economy and Infrastructure Chiril Gaburici on Wednesday to discuss the possibility of restitution and the economic value of Jewish property in Moldova. Cemeteries that need refurbishment and opportunities to slaughter kosher. Concerning the preservation of Jewish cemeteries in Moldova, the minister stated his intention to aid in the process, including a pilot program of 10 cemeteries.

Singer and the WJC delegation met with Monica Babuc (Moldova's Education Minister) to discuss ways in which they can help teachers learn about Holocaust education and preserve memories. Discussions also covered the establishment of the Museum of Jewish History in Moldova, and the importance of preserving and protecting monuments to honor Holocaust victims, and the proper care of Jewish cemetery sites. Singer thanked Minister Babuc in return for her contribution to education and Holocaust commemoration, and as for ensuring a productive and ongoing cooperation with Jewish communities.

Singer, Mirilashvili, and Bilinkis were also in contact with the chairman of the Democratic Party of Moldova Vlad Plahotniuc for discussions about relationships with the Jewish Community as well as bilateral relations between the Republic of Moldova with the State of Israel.

Singer met with the rabbis from the Jewish communities of Moldova during his visit. They discussed important concerns regarding the practice of religion and services as well for ways to improve Jewish daily life in every aspect.

Moldova is home to about 20,000 Jews. The Moldovan Jewish community, which was devastated by the Shoah and the civil war which is now flourishing, and has expanding across the country.
