Avanos has marketed the Cortrak*2 Entraal Access System to help with the installation of a medical-feeding tube. If the tube is placed incorrectly, however, patients could experience damage to their vocal cords, lungs, or the trachea. feeding tube placement The recall notification from Avanos Medical states that, since 2015 there were 60 deaths of patients and 23 injuries related to incorrect placement of nasogastric feed tubes using the CORTRAK*2 entry access system. These injuries include respiratory failure, pneumothorax (collapsed lung), perforation (a hole in the lung's wall, esophagus, or bowel) as well as pneumonia. an effusion of the pleura (excess fluid that has accumulated between the chest cavity and the lungs).

The Avanos warning is the second warning the FDA issued in 2022 concerning tube feeding through the stomach. The FDA warned healthcare professionals and parents of the risk of strangulation among children who feed tubes. Two cases of child strangulation were reported in 2021. It was caused by tubes that were wrapped around the neck of the patient.
