Amazon will Offer the Muscle-sensing Myo Geo Gesture Armband by the first Quarter of the Year.

Thalmic Labs announced that it will be reaching out to the masses via Amazon this quarter, just one year after we first tried the Myo. The muscle-sensing gesture control armband that is available for pre-order via the company’s website, will be $199. Some forums However, before that, Thalmic Labs has already sold the pre-orders of 50,000 (with around half shipped to buyers as of now) this is an impressive nod to some of the use case examples showed by Thalmic Labs and its several partners.

For those who aren't familiar with the Myo, it consists of eight muscle-sensing modules that you can attach to the broadest portion of your forearm, which will then allow the device to recognize your hand gestures. These gestures include squeezing, spreading your hands, waving your hands left and right, turning your forearm, and even one quick pinch with a second finger (which can be used to turn on or pause your Myo). Additionally, there's the combination of a gyroscope, an accelerometer and a magnetometer to detect your arm's movement.

There's no power button on the Myo; it wakes up the moment you take it out of your pocket and then instantly goes to sleep if it is left for a while. A single charge will last somewhere between 10 to 14 hours if used regularly, which is impressive.

Bluetooth LE is used to communicate with the Myo Connect application. The app feeds motion input back to the device or program that you control. Thalmic Labs demo room featured the Myo to control video playback volume, playback, and race the sun, a thrilling game that focuses on flight-based obstacle avoidance and an Orbotix Ollie rolling robot. With the exception of connectivity issues with the Ollie, and the challenging nature of the game's game The majority of these scenarios were very simple for us.

We've previously seen Myo demos involving PowerPoint, iTunes, Call Of Duty, Parrot AR.Drone and several smart glassess. Users will be able to download apps "connectors" from the Myo Market to try out some of these applications and to control Spotify, Netflix, Sonos and other popular games such as Minecraft and Saints Row IV.

Thalmic Labs had impressive displays just before CES. In November, the company introduced TedCas' Myo integration, which allows surgeons to manipulate medical images without touching a screen or pointer device. Haute Technique shared the story of how it allowed Armin van Buuren, a Dutch DJ, to use the armband as a controller to control the stage lighting at his concerts. It'll be interesting to see what people behind the gesture cameras come up with, as companies are betting big on gesture control.

Update The product page on Amazon is now live.
