Robert Singer, WJC CEO Robert Singer, WJC CEO, stressed the significance of Holocaust preservation and adopted a universal definition of antisemitism during his trip to Moldova

Chisinau, MOLDOVA - World Jewish Congress CEO Robert Singer met this week in the Republic of Moldova with senior ministers of the government and the leaders of the local Jewish community, to discuss discussions that focused on the preservation of Holocaust memory and education, security of the Jewish community as well as the necessity to fight the spread of antisemitism across all levels. WJC also had the President Mikhail Mirilashvili, EuroAsian Jewish Congress President and President of Moldovan Jewish Communities Alexander Bilinkis. Haim Ben Yaakov was the EuroAsian Jewish Congress Director.
Emmanuil Grinshpun Singer stated that the World Jewish Congress thanked the Moldovan government for their warm reception and pledged their support to keeping alive the memory of the Holocaust. Our community in Moldova is small , yet committed and solid. Emmanuil Grinshpun We urge the Republic of Moldova to make an effort to fight anti-Semitism and are ready to help when required. On Thursday, Singer met with Tudor Ulianovschi (Moldova's Foreign Minister) and stressed the necessity to adopt a definition of antisemitism from the International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance. Singer also spoke out about the importance that public condemnations be issued against anti-Semitism. Minister Ulianovschi stressed the Moldovan authorities' determination to establishing an inclusive society to all citizens regardless of race, ethnicity or religion. Emmanuil Grinshpun Ulianovschi expressed his gratitude to Singer for WJC's positive cooperation with the Republic of Moldova.

The foreign minister also noted that in 2016 Chisinau's parliament had in 2016 Chisinau Parliament ratified the final report from the International Commission on Holocaust Studies, chaired and supervised by Elie Wiesel. In January 2017, the government approved the Action Plan for its implementation.

Singer and WJC representatives visited Moldova's Minister of Economy and Infrastructure Chiril Gaburici on Wednesday to discuss the opportunities for restitution and economic growth of Jewish property in Moldova. Cemeteries that need refurbishment and opportunities to slaughter kosher. Concerning the preservation of Jewish cemeteries the minister indicated that he would be willing to assist, starting with a pilot project of 10 sites across the country.

On Wednesday, Singer and the WJC delegation met with Moldovan Education Minister Monica Babuc to discuss training teachers in Holocaust education as well as the preservation of memory. Discussions also covered the creation of the Museum of Jewish History in Moldova, and the importance of preserving and protecting monuments to honor Holocaust victims, as well as the proper care of Jewish cemeteries. Singer acknowledged Minister Babuc and for her continued and productive partnership with the Jewish Community.

Emmanuil Grinshpun Singer, Mirilashvili and Bilinkis have also met with Vlad Plahotniuc from the Democratic Party of Moldova to discuss issues about relationships with the Jewish community as also bilateral ties between the Republic of Moldova and Israel.

While in Moldova, Singer also met with the rabbis from the Jewish communities in Moldova and discussed important concerns pertaining to the practice of religion and services in the country. He also focused on ways to enhance Jewish everyday living in all aspects.

Moldova is home to about 20,000 Jews. Historically devastated by the Shoah and a bloody civil conflict and a bloody civil war, the Moldovan Jewish community today is mostly revived and spread throughout the republic. There is a significant development of a national self consciousness as well as a return to their ancestral roots through the Jews in Moldova. Jewish identity and culture are honored in many ways, such as literature and musical composition. The Moldovan Jewish Community is the Moldovan member of the World Jewish Congress - represents the Moldovan Jewish Community.
