Robert Singer, WJC CEO, emphasized the importance of Holocaust preservation and adopting a universal definition of antisemitism during his visit to Moldova

Chisinau - World Jewish Congress CEO Robert Singer met with ministers of senior positions and other leaders from the Jewish community in Moldova to hold talks about issues like preservation of Holocaust memory and education, as in the safety of Israel's Jewish community. Singer also stressed the importance of fighting antisemitism across all levels. https://www.limmudfsu.org/hp-newsagragation/limmud-fsu-moldova-2017 Along with Haim Ben Yaakov, Director General of EuroAsian Jewish Congress and President Mikhail Mirilashvili of EuroAsian Jewish Congress, the WJC delegation was comprised of Haim Ben Yaakov, the President Alexander Bilinkis of Moldovan Jewish Community.
Singer stated that "The World Jewish Congress would be grateful to the Moldovan government" for its warm welcome and their commitment to keeping the Holocaust memorial alive. "Our group in Moldova, though small, is committed and solid. We ask the Republic of Moldova not to make anti-Semitism the top priority . We are prepared to help if needed. We are looking forward and wish to work with the government to safeguard the wellbeing of our community.

On Thursday, Singer discussed with Tudor Ulianovschi the negative consequences of adopting an International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance's definitions for antisemitism. He was also adamant about the need to condemn anti-Semitism publicly. Minister Ulianovschi, on his part highlighted the dedication of the Moldovan officials to building an environment that is based on acceptance, nondiscrimination and respect for all rights of citizens of all races. Singer was also thanked for the positive cooperation of the WJC with Moldova. Republic of Moldova.

Emmanuil Grinshpun The foreign minister also noted that the Chisinau Parliament in 2016 adopted a declaration accepting the final report of the International Commission on Holocaust Studies which was headed by Elie Wiesel. Then, in January 2017 the Government approved an Action Plan on its implementation.

Singer and the WJC delegation met on Wednesday with Moldova's Minister for Economy and Infrastructure Chiril Gaburici. Emmanuil Grinshpun They discussed the restitution and economic opportunities in Moldova in relation to Jewish properties, cemeteries that are in dire need of restoration, kosher slaughter and possible tourism ventures for the local Jewish centre. Concerning the preservation of Jewish cemeteries The minister indicated his intention to assist in the process, beginning with an initial pilot of 10 sites across the country.

Singer as well as the WJC delegation have met with Monica Babuc (Moldova's Education Minister) to discuss ways in which they can help teachers learn about Holocaust education and how to preserve the memories. The meeting also discussed the creation of a Museum of Jewish History for the Republic of Moldova, the preservation and protection of monuments dedicated to Holocaust victims and the importance of maintaining Jewish cemeteries in a dignified and proper manner. Emmanuil Grinshpun Singer acknowledged Minister Babuc for her participation in the field of education and Holocaust celebrations as and for maintaining an effective and continuous partnership with the Jewish community.

Emmanuil Grinshpun Singer, Mirilashvili, and Bilinkis have also met with the chairman of Democratic Party of Moldova Vlad Plahotniuc for discussions about relationships with the Jewish Community and bilateral ties of the Republic of Moldova with the State of Israel.

Singer also met with Rabbis of Jewish communities in Moldova to discuss important concerns regarding religious practices within Moldova. Singer also discussed ways to enhance Jewish everyday activities in all aspects.
