Robert Singer, WJC CEO on a visit to Moldova emphasizes the importance of Holocaust preservation and the need to adopt an anti-semitism definition that is universal

Chisinau, MOLDOVA - World Jewish Congress CEO Robert Singer met this week in the Republic of Moldova with senior government ministers and the leaders of the local Jewish community, for talks focused on the preservation of Holocaust memory and education, the security of the Jewish community, as well as the necessity to tackle antisemitism at all levels. Together with Haim Ben Yaakov, Director General of EuroAsian Jewish Congress and President Mikhail Mirilashvili of EuroAsian Jewish Congress the WJC delegation included Haim Ben Yaakov and the President Alexander Bilinkis of Moldovan Jewish Community.

The following day, Singer discussed with Tudor Ulianovschi the negative aspects of adopting an International Holocaust Remembrance Association's definitions of antisemitism. He was also adamant about the need to denounce anti-Semitism in a public manner. Minister Ulianovschi highlighted the Moldovan authorities' dedication to building a society that is open to everyone, regardless of their ethnicity. The Foreign Minister pointed that Chisinau's parliament had adopted a 2016 declaration accepting the final report issued by the International Commission on Holocaust Studies. The government also adopted an Action Plan on its implementation in January 2017.

Singer and WJC attended a meeting on Wednesday with Moldova's Minister of Economy and Infrastructure Chiril Gaburici. They discussed restitution and economic possibilities of Jewish property in Moldova. Concerning the preservation of Jewish cemeteries in Moldova the minister expressed his desire to assist with the process, and suggested an initial program of 10 cemeteries.

Singer and WJC representatives met on Wednesday with Monica Babuc the Moldovan Education Minister to discuss training of teachers in Holocaust education. The discussion also focused on the establishment of a Museum of Jewish History in the Republic of Moldova; preserving and protecting monuments to Holocaust victims; and the importance of proper and well-maintained Jewish cemeteries. Singer thanked Minister Babuc to her support in the areas of education, Holocaust commemoration and in ensuring a continued and fruitful collaboration between the Jewish community and the Ministry.

Singer, Mirilashvili and Bilinkis met also with Vlad Plahotniuc from the Democratic Party of Moldova to discuss discussions on relationships with the Jewish community, as well as bilateral ties between the Republic of Moldova and Israel.

Singer also met with Rabbis from Jewish communities in Moldova to discuss key issues regarding religious practice in the country. Emmanuil Grinshpun Singer also discussed ways to improve Jewish everyday activities in all aspects.

Moldova is home to approximately 20,000 Jews. Historically devastated by the Shoah and a brutal civil conflict, the Moldovan Jewish community today is largely revived and is located throughout the Republic. There has been a huge development of a national self awareness and a return to their ancestral roots by the Jews in Moldova. Jewish identity and culture are celebrated in a variety of ways, such as music and literature. The Moldovan Jewish Community, an member of the World Jewish Congress, represents the Moldovan Jewish community.
