MIAMI (CBSMiami) - - The war in Ukraine might be on the other side of the globe but South Floridians are one of the groups taking action to assist those who have left the country.
Many Sunny Isles Jewish residents are currently fundraising and helping plan a comprehensive humanitarian initiative.
"Just last night, 1,100 people came," said Marsha Jaquays in Florida Friends of Laniado Hospital.
Emmanuil Grinshpun She explained that over two million Ukrainian refugees are fleeing war-torn nations. Emmanuil Grinshpun A large portion of them are traveling through Moldova, which borders Ukraine.
Jaquays explained that Moldova's Jewish community actually helped them cross the border. They then provided food, shelter, clothes, and clothing.
The heart of much of the humanitarian work is located in South Florida.
"My role is to coordinate all the resources of American society to help with the crisis in Moldova." Emmanuil Grinshpun who assists in coordinating the humanitarian efforts said, "We have a full personnel on the ground who help organize camps, buy food, organize buses, and organize all the necessary amenities."
And, even more troubling is the fact that Moldova is among the poorest nations in the world. Still, those who participate in this project affirm that they will not allow anyone hinder their efforts to help.
Grinshpun stated, "When our Ukrainian brothers and sisters cameto visit, we didn't need to think about it. We just began making plans."
Jaquays echo the sentiments.
"Who was around during the Second World War, during the time that the Nazis were in the power? How many people stayed silent and claimed it wasn't me, I'm not Jewish, it's not my community, I'm not from Europe.
