British Museum to be Digitally Recreated In Minecraft

British Museum to be digitally recreated in Minecraft By Joe Miller Technology Reporter

23 September 2014

The British Museum in London - complete with all of its exhibits - will be recreated in the video game Minecraft.

This project is part of the Museum of the Future program that aims to increase the attraction of the institution.

Many real-life companies have created maps in the Minecraft universe, including Ordnance Survey and the Danish government, who aim to make young people more aware of their work.

This week, Minecraft was sold to Microsoft for $2.5bn (PS1.5bn).

A spokesperson for the museum said the project was in "an early stage of planning" and that the "build" had not yet begun.

She explained that the company was looking to recruit people to assist with the "construction".

The British Museum

The first national museum of the nation, established in 1753.

UK's most popular visitor attraction

More than six million people visit the museum every year, and houses eight million items

Its natural history collections were moved to South Kensington in 1880s, where it would eventually become the Natural History Museum.

Its instantly easily identifiable Great Court was designed by Lord Foster and is the largest covered public area in Europe.

One employee of the British Museum posted details about the project on Reddit and requested volunteers.

The game received enthusiastic reactions from Minecraft fans all over the world.

Initial stages

Digitally creating the Great Court, facade and the interior of the building is the first step in the process.

The institution hopes that this stage will be in time for a public discussion titled changing public dialogues around museum collections in the digital age, which will take place on the 16th of October.

Ed Barton, who researches gaming for the analytics firm Ovum Barton told the BBC the British Museum's move to Minecraft will help it to be "perceived as something enjoyable" and could serve as a useful educational tool for a younger demographic.

"It's the digital equivalent of building the British Museum in Lego," he declared. It has to be built brick by brick.

The institution was to be commended for crowdsourcing the project "as it turns it into an interactive thing" and could further engage youngsters Minecraft fans.

"What is a great idea it is to be asked to create the Elgin Marbles in Minecraft," he said.

Those interested in contributing to the British Museum's project can register their interest on Reddit.
