Officers Quarters: Leveling as a Guild in Cataclysm, Part 2

Last week, a reader wrote to us asking about the rules and guidelines for a guild leader when it comes to the character leveling process of an expansion. Although we are focused on Cataclysm, a lot of these tips can be applied to any expansion that has a higher level cap. Part 1 provided four tips:

Have a plan.

Organise group activities.

Don't rush anyone.

Set a date and time for the game's end.

This week, I've got five more.

5. Keep it light.

For an instant take a moment to think about GearScores as well as progression bosses. Also, consider wipes. Think about counter-comps and ratings for arenas. Have you experienced any stress? These aren't easy topics for the majority of players. Let that be a reminder to all officers that the initial leveling period of an expansion is usually the only time players do not have to think about these issues. Don't cause stress during this period. Instead, focus on having fun and enjoying the leveling process.

Your ultimate goal should be to find an equilibrium between encouraging people to level up and maintaining a positive attitude.

6. Make sure that your guild is leveling.

Celebrate the milestones as they occur. Recognize players who have made remarkable contributions through their achievements or other activities. These reminders help players to feel they are part of a larger community.

Another way to promote an atmosphere of shared purpose is to boost guild achievements through achievement bounties or scheduled events.

Be aware that at least four of the five members of a dungeon team must be members of the same guild for the run to count toward an official guild run. Encourage your members to run with their fellow members whenever they can. It's not necessary to bend your arms considering the difficulty of Cataclysm's dungeons. It's the smart option.

7. Find rerollers of level 1.

Some members will be tempted by the new races and race/class combinations and decide to level up to a higher level from scratch. You want to know in advance who's planning to do this. If half of the guild is beginning over, you're going be required to prepare by reducing expectations for the initial few weeks. It's possible that some of the rerollers might beat some of the players from the 80s to maximum level, based on how fast people play. You have no control over this. The best approach is to manage expectations of players by collecting data and tracking their progress.

Players who choose not to roll again could become frustrated if they can't do anything as a group for some time. At the very least, you should make sure you have a 10 players group for battlegrounds or raids. If not, a feasible 5-player dungeon or arena team can at least provide guild members something to work on together, if they manage their schedules.

If the number of rerollers is going to cause a big issue, you can ask some players to volunteer to upgrade their 80s first to help in guild activities, and then switch their mains later. If your guild has a loot system based on points You could let such players transfer their points to their new main once they've got their character up to raiding speed.

However the fact that an individual wants to change mains doesn't mean you have to provide them with a slot after they do. To ensure that you have a group comp that is viable at 85, you'll need to be tough on players. Two dozen DPS and a tank won't be able to bring down the boss at 85.

8. Don't be apprehensive about loss, but take lessons from them.

Despite all the steps, you may still discover that you are losing players. Many players view an expansion as a fresh beginning. They may take advantage of the chance to join a guild of a friend on a different server or reroll on a different faction to change the pace. These aren't things that are easily controlled.

The problem is when you lose members due to their desire to join an "better" guild regardless of what it means to them. The only way to find out the reason why members left and aren't forthcoming about it, is to ask. Talk to them privately. Inform them that you are not angry at the situation (unless this is the case), but that you would like to know more about the reasons they quit the guild. Although they may not be able to give you a straight answer right away but some may. Tsa club This information will help you improve your guild and prevent future losses.

9. Make sure you sign up early if you'll be required to.

Soon there will be many 85s looking to enter the final phase and looking for a guild to join. Others will want to have access to your sweet guild perks and bonuses. The process of recruiting will be much easier once the expansion is available. Beware of freeloaders!

It's impossible to please everyone however if you've done your job well and built an engaging, successful community, then you should be able to lead the majority of members through the leveling process and even into the final phase. The process of leveling through Cataclysm can be one of the most exciting events in WoW's history. Do not worry too much, and just enjoy it!
