Monthly subscription boxes are a curious concept that allows subscribers to pay a cost to receive things such as T-shirts, toys, items, makeup or food that they have no choice over. The model is utilized by companies such as Dollar Shave Club, Fancy, Graze, Loot Crate and Fancy Crate. But Mojang is a relative newcomer to the market. That's right, Minecraft now has its own swag box.
For a monthly fee of $30, Mojang says it will send its subscribers a special "Mine Chest" full of "hand-picked official Minecraft products." Although the exact items are not known, Mojang says that customers can expect to receive a t-shirt, crafting recipe, and other collectibles every month.
The Mine Chest was first unveiled in July 2015 at MineCon. Mojang offered 5,000 beta keys available to attendees to ensure they had the first boxes, but it's now accessible to everyone. While it sounds like the perfect gift for anyone who is a Minecraft fan however, it comes with some stipulations.
First, Mojang requires that subscribers select a monthly subscription, which is billed in advance, however, shipments will not be made until May. Minecraft-server-list Mojang says that paying in advance will allow it to better serve customers by buying premium items in higher quantities, which will lower costs. Each month, a Mine Chest will be charged $7 for shipping. Mine Chests are only available in the US at this time. Mojang blames high shipping costs for its exclusivity, but says it's "working extremely hard" to lower the cost and expand availability.
