The World Education Games kicks off today, World Literacy Day , Tuesday 5 March. Official figures from the Games administration confirm that there are 5,000,000 participants from 220 countries. From 995 schools, there are 152,234 Kiwi children who have registered as School Blacks in order to participate in the biggest 3-day online education event in the world. This is the biggest contingent ever seen in New Zealand.
"We are thrilled with the rise in registrations from New Zealand schools this year. Early registrations usually reflect well on the final numbers of participation during competition. We are especially excited by the growing interest in the World Education Games, and the UNICEF School in a Box cause it supports this school year," said Karen Rolleston (CEO of 3P Learning NZ), a division of the company that is behind these games.
Jacqui Southey is UNICEF's Education for Development Officer. She states, "We were thrilled with the success of 2012 World Education Games and are extremely excited about the 2013 Games."
"We believe that our School Blacks will do well and make it to the top ten countries this year. Our School Blacks World Education Games ambassadors are also conducting events to raise money for UNICEF School in a Box programme. We ask that parents, schools, and communities get behind their efforts. Go Black! Because we all love games Go the School Blacks Go Black!" said Mrs Rolleston.
