Real-world compasses do not point to your spawn point on Earth. If only. They instead indicate "magnetic North", which is close but not at North Pole. It also is slow to move in time. The reasons behind this are a bit nebulous but they are mostly due to the molten iron swirling around in the Earth's core.

Magnetic compasses were developed back in the Chinese Han Dynasty, around 200BC, and were used in fortune-telling. They were made of lodestone, a naturally magnetised iron ore. It took 900 years before their descendents in the Song Dynasty figured out that they could be used for navigation too. The first documented use of a compass in both the Western and Islamic world was in 1190.
Then, they got popular and fast. They were useful for aiding in the direction of travel in winter, when there was no visible sun or constellations. This allowed sailors to make safer and more precise journeys.
