It was a platform that started as a video game about dodging explosions from hissing cactus-shaped creatures and became the blank canvas on which millions of gamers create content upload it, and generate trillions of views - literally. Today, YouTube, in collaboration with Minecraft developer Mojang is celebrating the world's largest trillionth views (trillion with a T) with a timeline of the game's remarkable and transformative history on the platform.

Minecraft's chief storyteller Lydia Winters credits the game's trillion views and appreciation for the variety of ways Minecraft players share their stories to Minecraft.

She tells The Verge that there are people who are in search of adventure, people who build, and people who play together. All of these ways of playing are important to her. As Minecraft's chief storyteller her team's job is to create and create a world players want to create in. This is a major reason for the game's success.

"The reason Minecraft is so popular on YouTube is because YouTube videos are a way to tell stories," she says. "So when you have Minecraft and you have the ability to tell any story you like in the Minecraft world It's one of the main reasons why we have so many people creating Minecraft content."

"All these ways of playing are important to us"

According to the numbers, Minecraft's YouTube community has more than 35,000 creators from more than 150 countries. YouTube's content ranges from basic role-playing video clips, dubbed "Let's Plays" and even videos that don't have any Minecraft gameplay whatsoever.

Earnest Pettie is the YouTube trend and culture leader. He is aware of the crazy and wonderful ways that Minecraft users use the site. He is fascinated by a specific creator who uses the Minecraft aesthetic and is well-known in the Minecraft community even having never played the game.

"Interestingly One of the biggest trends on Minecraft is animation, and that's animation either made using Minecraft or animation that is inspired by the Minecraft aesthetic," Petite says. "There's the creator, Jake Fellman, who creates YouTube shorts. He's produced over 100 Minecraft-inspired videos that are actually computer-generated animation. He is one of the most popular Minecraft creators of the year.

Fellman's videos are fifteen-second bursts of hyperrealistic "What would happen if Minecraft graphics were rendered with the Unreal Engine 5" shorts that feature cute interactions with sheep or monsters and have more than 1 million views a pop.

YouTube offers a fascinating overview of the history of the game on its platform over the last 11 years, including statistics and graphs, as well as facts about the steps required to make 1 trillion views.

It's interesting to see how genres of Minecraft videos evolve over time as they fade in and out of popularity. In the early days of Minecraft when it was a multi-million-view hit, the most popular were parodies of music videos from Minecraft well-known characters like CaptainSparklez. Dream, who recently was awarded the Game Award for content creators of the year, is now the top-rated Minecraft player thanks to his Minecraft manhunt series. This shows his friends trying to stop his advancement.

Minecraft is the most-watched YouTube video ever. It was watched more than 200 billion times in 2020. Second place was a bit oddly Roblox (another Sandbox-like video game) was able to earn less than half that. Minecraft's natural beauty is a major reason for its seemingly untouchable popularity. It's an open world that is filled with possibilities for creation and iteration of that creation in a manner unlike any other video game boast. Pettie also mentions the community as another reason.

"One trillion views isn't possible without the inventiveness of the creators who have uploaded Minecraft videos over the years," he says.
