Minecraft Meet-up in Peterborough Described As 'awful'

Minecraft meet-up in Peterborough described as 'awful'

14 September 2015

Parents of angry Minecraft gamers have taken to social media to voice their displeasure about "awful" queues and a lack to do at an unofficial convention.

On Saturday, approximately 4,100 people attended MineVention at Peterborough Arena to meet stars and take part in games.

However, many said they waited for hours to meet idols or eat meals and demanded refunds.

Organiser Lisa O'Brien said the queues were long, and she'll issue a statement regarding refunds in the near future.

The event is not affiliated with Minecraft developer Mojang and was founded in Ireland. It was the first time that it was held in the UK.

TV presenter

It gave fans of the worldwide gaming smash Minecraft which lets players construct various objects using cubic blocks - an opportunity to meet famous "Youtubers" and get photos and play games.

The event, starring TV's Gadget Show presenter Jason Bradbury as well as a call to fans to dress up as Steve, the character from the game. Steve to attempt to break the world record.

But afterwards it came under criticism on social media with people complaining about long queues and the absence of food and merchandise stalls and activities for fans.

Vicky Abraham posted on Facebook that she had queued with her five-year-old son for over an hour for just 30 seconds on a PC.

Another parent claimed she waited 45 minutes for an ice-cold bottle and described the experience as "appalling" with "naff-all to do". Another parent contacted the BBC to say they left after half an hour because the lines were so terrible, and that her son was "crying all the way to home".

A few people have posted on Facebook that they were happy with the event, one of them wrote: "I thought your event was great for PS15."

Lisa O'Brien, of O'Brien Event Management, said she did "sympathise with parents, as we all have children". Due to the large number of people who showed at the event rather than buying tickets in advance, queues were 45 minutes long, she explained.

She said that the convention was unprecedented in scale and that some official items didn't arrive at the right time to allow it to be held.

She said the organisers had "taken into consideration all comments and suggestions" and were scheduled to meet to determine the reasons for the incident, and that a second statement would be released on Monday evening.
