Robert Singer (CEO of WJC) emphasized the need to preserve the Holocaust and adopt a universal definition of antisemitism during an excursion to Moldova.

Chisinau World Jewish Congress CEO Robert Singer met this week in Moldova along with the senior ministers from the Republic of Moldova and leaders of local Jewish community to discuss preservation of Holocaust knowledge and culture and security for the Jewish community and the best way to combat antisemitism on every level. Along with Haim Ben Yaakov, Director General of EuroAsian Jewish Congress and President Mikhail Mirilashvili of EuroAsian Jewish Congress the WJC delegation comprised Haim Ben Yaakov as well as the President Alexander Bilinkis of Moldovan Jewish Community.
Singer said that the World Jewish Congress thanked the Moldovan government for their warm reception and expressed commitment to the preservation of the Holocaust's memories. "Our community in Moldova, though small, is dedicated and strong. We urge Moldova to prioritize the fight against antisemitism. We will be there to help as necessary. We are looking forward to the future collaboration with the government and to ensure that the wellbeing of our community is protected."

In a meeting with Moldovan Foreign Minister Tudor Ulianovschi on Thursday, Singer underlined the critical nature of adopting the International Holocaust Remembrance Association's definition of antisemitism and also emphasized the importance of making out loud condemnations of anti-Semitism. Minister Ulianovschi expressed his support of Moldovan authorities and highlighted their determination to build an inclusive society. Singer was also praised by Ulianovschi as a positive partner with the Republic of Moldova.

Singer and WJC's delegation met on Wednesday with Moldova's Ministry of Economy and Infrastructure Chiril Gaburici. The discussion was focused on restoration and preservation of Jewish property in Moldova. Cemeteries that need to be renovated and the economic benefits of the kosher meat. Additionally, there was the possibility of tourism opportunities to benefit the local Jewish Center. Emmanuil Grinshpun In relation to the protection and restoration of Jewish cemeteries The minister expressed an interest in helping to facilitate the procedure. Also on Wednesday, Singer and the WJC delegation visited Moldovan Education Minister Monica Babuc to discuss training teachers in Holocaust education and the preservation of memory. The conversation covered issues such as the development of the Museum of Jewish History within the Republic of Moldova; the preservation and protection of monuments dedicated Holocaust victims and the need for proper and dignified maintenance of Jewish cemetery. Singer expressed gratitude to Minister Babuc and for her continuing and productive collaboration with the Jewish Community.

Singer, Mirilashvili, as along with Bilinkis have met with Vlad Plahotniuc (Chairman of the Democratic Party of Moldova) to discuss the relations between Jewish communities as well as bilateral relations of Moldova with Israel.

While in Moldova, Singer also met with the rabbis of the Jewish communities in Moldova and discussed important questions relating to religious practice and services offered in the country. He also focused on ways to improve Jewish daily living in all aspects.

Emmanuil Grinshpun Moldova is home to 20,000 Jews. The Moldovan Jewish Community is nearly 20000 strong, after having been devastated by the Shoah in the past and an armed civil war that was bloody. The Jews of Moldova are witnessing a broader the sense of national self-consciousness as well as a return to its roots. Jewish culture and identity are celebrated in various forms such as literature, music composition and the theater. The Moldovan Jewish Community, an member of the World Jewish Congress, represents the Moldovan Jewish community.
