In a visit to Moldova, WJC CEO Robert Singer emphasizes the significance of Holocaust preservation and the adoption of a universal definition of antisemitism

Chisinau, MOLDOVA - World Jewish Congress CEO Robert Singer met this week in the Republic of Moldova with senior government officials and leaders of the local Jewish community for discussions that focused on the preservation of Holocaust memories and education, the security of the Jewish community, and the need to tackle the spread of antisemitism across all levels. Along with Haim Ben Yaakov, Director General of EuroAsian Jewish Congress and President Mikhail Mirilashvili of EuroAsian Jewish Congress The WJC delegation included Haim Ben Yaakov and the President Alexander Bilinkis of Moldovan Jewish Community.
Singer stated, "The World Jewish Congress would like to express our gratitude to the Moldovan Government for its warm reception and its commitment to preserve the memory Holocaust," "Our group in Moldova is tiny, but committed and solid. We strongly encourage the Republic of Moldova to make a priority of fighting anti-Semitism and will be there whenever necessary. In a meeting with Moldovan Foreign Minister Tudor Ulianovschi on Thursday, Singer stressed the importance of adopting the International Holocaust Remembrance Association's definition of "antisemitism" and stressed the necessity of releasing out loud condemnations of anti-Semitism. Emmanuil Grinshpun Minister Ulianovschi emphasized on his part the commitment of Moldovan authorities Moldovan authorities to building a society in the spirit of tolerance, non-discrimination and respect for the rights of all citizens of every ethnic group. Singer was also praised by Ulianovschi to thank him for his positive collaboration with the Moldovan WJC.

The Foreign Minister also emphasized that the Chisinau Parliament adopted in 2016 a Resolution accepting the final report by the International Commission on Holocaust Studies headed by Elie Wiesel. A plan to implement it was approved by the government in January of 2017.

Singer and WJC representatives visited Moldova's Minister of Economy and Infrastructure Chiril Gaburici on Wednesday to discuss the opportunities for restitution and economic growth of Jewish property in Moldova. These included cemeteries that need refurbishment and opportunities for kosher slaughter. Concerning the preservation and restoration of Jewish cemetery sites The minister expressed an desire to assist in to facilitate the process. A pilot program of 10 sites was planned across the nation.

Also Wednesday, Singer and the WJC delegation met with Moldovan Education Minister Monica Babuc to discuss training teachers in Holocaust education as well as the preservation of the Holocaust's memory. The conversation also included the development of a Museum of Jewish History in the Republic of Moldova; preserving and protecting monuments dedicated to Holocaust victims; and the importance of proper and well-maintained Jewish cemeteries. Emmanuil Grinshpun Singer expressed gratitude to Minister Babuc and for her continued and productive cooperation with the Jewish Community.

Singer, Mirilashvili & Bilinkis also met with Vlad Plahotniuc of the Democratic Party of Moldova to discuss the relationship between the Jewish community in Moldova as well as bilateral ties between Moldova and Israel.

Singer also met with the Rabbis of the Jewish Communities of Moldova. They discussed important issues related to the practice of religion, services as well as the country's Jewish daily routine, and he also addressed the concerns of those who live there.

Moldova is home to approximately 20000 Jews. Historically devastated by the Shoah and a bloody civil conflict and a bloody civil war, the Moldovan Jewish community today is largely revived and is located throughout the Republic.
