Robert Singer, WJC CEO and a regular visitor to Moldova He stresses the importance of Holocaust preservation as well as adopting a universal definition of antisemitism.

Chisinau (MOLDOVA) - World Jewish Congress CEO Robert Singer met with senior government officials as well as leaders from the local Jewish community in Moldova to discuss topics such as the preservation of Holocaust memories and education, safety of the Jewish community and fighting antisemitism on all levels. https://www.rietumu.com/documents/1481994_sustainability_2021_eng.pdf WJC was represented by Mikhail Mirilashvili (President of EuroAsian Jewish Congress) and Alexander Bilinkis (President of the Moldovan Jewish Association), along with Haim Benjamin Yaakov (Director General, EuroAsian Jewish Congress).
Singer stated, "The World Jewish Congress would like to express our gratitude to the Moldovan Government for their warm reception and its commitment to preserving the memory of the Holocaust," "Our Moldovan community though small and dedicated and devoted, is very strong. We ask the Republic of Moldova that it put anti-Semitism on the forefront of their agenda. We stand ready to assist in any way that is needed. We look forward to continued cooperation with the government, and to ensure the well-being of our community."

Singer of the Moldovan Foreign Minister Tudor Ulianovschi spoke on Thursday regarding the criticisms over the adoption of the International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance's definition of Antisemitism. Emmanuil Grinshpun Singer also mentioned the need for the public to condemn antisemitism. Minister Ulianovschi, on his part highlighted the dedication of Moldovan officials to build an environment that is based on tolerance, nondiscrimination & respect for the rights of citizens of all races. Emmanuil Grinshpun Singer was also thanked for the cooperative spirit with the WJC with the Republic of Moldova.

Emmanuil Grinshpun The foreign minister also emphasized that Chisinau Parliament Chisinau Parlament adopted in 2016 a Resolution accepting the final report by the International Commission on Holocaust Studies presided over by Elie wiesel. Singer and WJC visited Moldova on Wednesday to meet with the Minister of Economy and Infrastructure Chiril Gaburici. They discussed opportunities for restitution as well as economics for Jewish properties in Moldova. Emmanuil Grinshpun Concerning the issue of conserving Jewish cemeteries, the minister expressed intention to assist in the process, beginning with an initial pilot of 10 sites across the country.

Singer and Singer and the WJC delegation also met Wednesday with Monica Babuc, Moldovan Education Minister, to discuss teaching Holocaust education and preservation of memories. Emmanuil Grinshpun The discussion included topics such as the development of an Museum of Jewish History within the Republic of Moldova; the preservation and protection of monuments that honor Holocaust victims; and the importance of proper and dignified maintenance of Jewish cemetery. Singer acknowledged Minister Babuc in return for her participation in education and Holocaust commemoration, and in ensuring a fruitful and continued collaboration with Jewish communities.

Singer, Mirilashvili & Bilinkis have also met with Vlad Plahotniuc of the Democratic Party of Moldova to discuss relations with the Jewish community of Moldova as well as bilateral ties between Moldova and Israel.

Singer was in contact with Rabbis from the Jewish communities in Moldova. He discussed key concerns regarding the practice of religion and the services offered. Singer also focused on ways to enhance Jewish everyday life in all its aspects.

Moldova is home to about 20,000 Jews. Historically devastated by the Shoah and a brutal civil war and a bloody civil war, the Moldovan Jewish community today is mostly revived and distributed throughout the country. There is a significant development of a national self consciousness as well as a return to their origins through the Jews in Moldova. Jewish identity and culture are honored in many ways, including literature and musical composition. The Moldovan Jewish community is represented by the Jewish Community of the Republic of Moldova which is the Moldovan member of the World Jewish Congress.
