Does Minecraft come with a win-condition?
No.
I'm talking about a win. conditon ends the game. You strive for it. It is forced from the outside.
It also serves a purpose by providing a framework within which we can (I insist on stating that we will) create our own winning conditions. My boss was building a temple that had an entrance shaped like an enormous cock. He didn't have to build it, and there was nothing to do when it was finished. Apart from him showing me. But he was given a task and he set to it and faced obstacles. He was able to complete the task, but ended up dying. He learnt from the process. All that gaming stuff that happened.
If you believe that games have to have a win-condition, then you could argue that Minecraft is just a frame that allows for a win condition. This seems like a sloppy method of thinking, as there are many things that create enjoyment in the same manner. Like Electroplankton. These are also known as games. They're like games when we play them, even though they do require our engagement. MINECRAFT SERVERS We don't deny that they are play-to-play with the audience's involvement. They only get done when they're being played.
I've also argued with vigor (and when drunk) that Minecraft has an excellent story. It builds it generatively, and you are a part of it however, it doesn't go against the craftsmanship that was used to design it by Notch. This is a leap beyond.
Doug has written about the deeper significance of the self-deprecating games created by the Copenhagen team. But I'm two pints away to delve into that in the moment. On screen keyboards are a pain.
