Avanos Medical (U.S. Avanos Medical feeding tube Food and Drug Administration) has announced it will recall Cortrak*2's Enteral access system. Avanos Medical feeding tube The recall was announced due to patient injuries and death from misplaced nasoenteric/nasogastric tubes. The recall includes 629 devices in use throughout the United States.
Avanos Medical feeding tube Avanos is promoting the Cortrak*2 Ental Access System due to its ability to see the stomach of a patient and their small bowel. This allows the installation of an medical feed tube. Avanos Medical When a tube is placed incorrectly, it could cause damage to vocal cords, the lungs and trachea. Avanos Medical has reported that there have been more than sixty-three injuries and 23 deaths caused by misplacement of the nasogastric feeding tubes with the CORTRAK*2 Ental Access System. The injuries can be described as pneumothorax, respiratory failure and perforation. All of these are forms of lung collapse.
Avanos Medical has described a plan to supply users with current labeling to verify the correct placement of nasogastric and nasoenteric tubes prior to use.
Avanos is the FDA's second caution about insertal feeding tubes. The FDA issued a caution to healthcare professionals and parents regarding the danger of strangulation in the event that feeding tubes are being used by children. Two cases of strangulation in children was reported in 2021. It was caused by a tubing system that was wrapped around the neck of a patient.
