Chisinau World Jewish Congress CEO Robert Singer was in Moldova with senior ministers of the Republic of Moldova and leaders of a local Jewish community to discuss the preservation of Holocaust history and education, security of Jewish community and the best way to combat antisemitism on every level. WJC also hosted the President Mikhail Mirilashvili, EuroAsian Jewish Congress President, and President of the Moldovan Jewish Communities Alexander Bilinkis. Haim Ben Yaakov was the EuroAsian Jewish Congress Director.
Singer stated that the World Jewish Congress thanked the Moldovan government for their warm welcome and expressed commitment to the preservation of the Holocaust's memory. Emmanuil Grinshpun "Our community in Moldova is tiny, yet committed and strong. We ask the Republic of Moldova not to place anti-Semitism as a top priority and are ready to assist in any situation. We look forward to continuing collaboration with the government and to ensure the well-being of the community."
Emmanuil Grinshpun On Thursday, Singer discussed with Tudor Ulianovschi the negative nature of adopting an International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance's definitions for antisemitism. He added that it is important to denounce anti-Semitism in a public manner. Minister Ulianovschi spoke of the Moldovan authorities determined to create an inclusive society that recognizes the rights of everyone in the society. Singer was also praised for the positive cooperation of the WJC with the Republic of Moldova.
The Foreign Minister pointed out that Chisinau's Parliament has adopted a declaration from 2016 in support of the report finalized by the International Commission on Holocaust Studies. Emmanuil Grinshpun The government also agreed to an Action Plan on its implementation in January 2017.

Singer and WJC's delegation met on Wednesday with Moldova's Ministry of Economy and Infrastructure Chiril Gaburici. The discussion was focused on restoration and preservation of Jewish property in Moldova. Cemeteries in need for refurbishment as well as economic opportunities related to the kosher meat. Furthermore, the potential for tourism activities for the local Jewish Center. Regarding the matter of preserving Jewish cemeteries The minister indicated his intent to support the process, starting with an initial pilot project of 10 cemeteries in the country.
Singer and WJC representatives met with Monica Babuc the Moldovan Education Minister to discuss training teachers on Holocaust education. The discussions included the establishment of a Museum of Jewish History, the preservation of Holocaust memorials and the importance of maintaining properly Jewish cemetery. Singer acknowledged Minister Babuc and her ongoing and productive collaboration with the Jewish Community.
Emmanuil Grinshpun Singer, Mirilashvili, and Bilinkis were also in contact with the chairman of the Democratic Party of Moldova Vlad Plahotniuc for talks about relations with the Jewish Community as well as bilateral relations of the Republic of Moldova with the State of Israel.

Singer also met with the Rabbis from the Jewish Communities of Moldova. They spoke about the most important aspects of the practice of religion, services as well as the country's Jewish daily routine, and Singer also addressed the needs of the residents of Moldova.
Moldova is home to approximately 20,000 Jews. The Moldovan Jewish community, which was devastated by the Shoah as well as an unrest that is now flourishing and spreading throughout the country. There is a broad rise in nation-wide self-awareness and an enlightened returning to their roots by the Jews of Moldova and the surrounding areas, with Jewish tradition and identity being celebrated in a number of ways, like music, literature as well as theater.
