Players can now report chat messages in multiplayer games using the new system, but the community is concerned about the implications.
Mojang's community manager said that the company is not going to alter its controversial player reporting feature . He also demanded the end of harassment of Mojang employees.
MojangMeesh posted on Reddit to clarify that although the company values player feedback it won't necessarily change the design principles Mojang Studios follows-this includes the new report system. MCPROFILE They asked users to stop "following Mojang employees here on Reddit" and harass them on unrelated threads. The post has received more than 2000 downvotes as of writing.
Minecraft players have been arguing about the new player report system since it was announced just a month ago and was then implemented in yesterday's 1.19.1 update. It allows players on private and Mojang-hosted servers to flag inappropriate chat messages in chat for review by Mojang investigators, potentially resulting in suspensions and bans for players who violate Minecraft's community guidelines even on servers hosted by self-hosted players. Many are concerned that the system will result in player bans for messages that are not in context, and that it gives Microsoft too much power to control the content of discussions on its platform.
I don't believe their argument is unfounded even if some players are acting badly about it. It's hard to imagine a scenario in which this system doesn’t ban anyone for making jokes with friends. Although there will be appeals, it is also evident that there are numerous misconceptions regarding the system's operation. Read any thread about the subject and it won't take long before you'll see someone complaining about having their private server's chat 'monitored' by Microsoft or concerned that they'll get banned for cursing: neither of which is possible, according to Mojang's own FAQ regarding the reporting system.
This is the place where Mojang is stuck. A thread from Stuart Duncan, who is the administrator of an autism-friendly Minecraft server for children with autism-shows how much vile stuff Minecraft hosts regularly. Duncan presents studies and reports from the ADL and the BBC and other sources which tell tales of predators and racists playing Minecraft in a way that is abominable. It is important to provide tools to fight this behavior. While it's true that "think of the children" and other scary stories are often used to justify repressive policies in real life, a tool that lets users report dodgy chat messages in Minecraft doesn't really seem like the tip of a dangerous wedge.
If you say "no one asked" for this, "the entire community hates this" or "no-one needs this" Please stop trying to be an advocate for everyone. "If you're worried about the possibility of exploits, that's great. You're not alone. I'm aware that it's not perfect. But real people can be saved by this.Always be aware of that.July 27 2022
In other Minecraft news, Mojang recently announced that the game won't include NFTs because they don't align with the "values of creative inclusion". The move at least was able to get an enthusiastic response from the player base, although there's been no confirmation yet as to what the AI they've developed to play Minecraft thinks about it.
One of Josh's first memories is of playing Quake 2 on the family computer at a time when he was too young to be playing that and he's been irreparably game-brained ever since. His writing has been published in Vice and Fanbyte as well as the Financial Times. He's a fan of almost anything, and has written far too many articles on everything from visual novels to Assassin's Creed. His most fervent interests are CRPGs and immersive games. He thinks you are too harsh about Deus Ex.
