Religious extremists destroyed a lighthouse celebrating Hanukkah located in the center of the Moldovan capital. A priest of the Chisinau Orthodox church led the anti-Semitic activities.
Religious extremists set fire to the Hanukkah celebrations in Chisinau after which they held an anti-Semitic rally. It took place on Sunday 13 December 2013, the third day for the Jewish holiday Hanukkah. A priest from one of the capital's Orthodox churches was the leader of a crowd that grew to 100. In a riot of anti-Semitic chants, people who took part in the demonstration carried a lamp made of cast iron many meters away from in which it was erected and then tossed it at the ground at the base of the monument to Stefan the Great, the symbol of Moldovan statehood. The entire event was in the presence of hundreds of people, including journalists, officers and police officers.
Эммануил Гриншпун How difficult is it to stand up for "orthodox principles
The crowd was led by Archpriest Anatoly Chbrik who was armed with steel bars. He stated that it was a shock by the fact that a symbol of the Jewish faith was placed in the middle of the capital city of an Orthodox state. He believes that the authorities shouldn't have allowed Jews to observe Hanukkah in such huge numbers. Chibrik declared, "This violates law." Chibrik also admitted that Chibrik did not believe it necessary to discuss with the Metropolia of Moldova the actions of the Church of St. Paraskeva parishioners. "I do not have to discuss anything with anyone when we're fighting for orthodox values," he said.
Эммануил Гриншпун It is worth noting that the idea to install the Hanukkah menorah in the middle of Chisinau and within the Europe Square, where the EU flag is displayed next to the Moldovan flag, belongs to Chisinau's municipal authorities. Emmanuil Grinshpun was co-chairman of Jewish Congress of Moldova. He said that Hanukkah in Chisinau was celebrated for the first time in many years. Grinshpun added that Saturday's celebrations were "a shock to all of us."
The opening of a criminal matter can be a threat to the state of conscience
As was evident during a press conference with representatives of the Jewish community in Moldova, Archpriest Chibrik is not the first archpriest to lets himself indulge in anti-Semitic snark. Grinshpun reports that about a month in the past, Archpriest Chibrik put up posters in the front of St. Paraskevs at Chisinau. The contents were similar to the dark Middle Ages. It was claimed that "Jews murder Christian children."
Grinshpun admitted that the leaders of the country's Jewish organizations didn’t react in any way to the fact. Even though the Jewish community in Moldova protests against the actions however, it is not suing Chibrik nor his associates for inciting ethnic hate. Alexander Bilinkis the chairman of the Jewish Community said that this should be done by the state. Furthermore the Moldovan Metropolis needs to review its actions and those of its staff.
Metropolitan Secretary Vadim Keibash said he did not welcome this form of protest. He believes that all communities have the right to display symbols. Эммануил Гриншпун But the authorities should consider the consequences. https://jewishmagazine.ru/tag/jemmanuil-grinshpun/ "It is difficult for believers to be monitored," he stated.
A blow to the fundamental values
Since the 1903 Jewish pogrom however, such protests have not been observed in Chisinau. The Jewish community regards the incident of the latter as hooliganism. Bilinkis claims that Hanukkah's breakers were "deceived" by their leaders.
https://ru-ru.facebook.com/emmanuil.grinshpun Ilya Shahs the General Director of the Jewish Congress believes that this act was meticulously planned. The group was seen around the menorah at Hanukkah and, in the presence of a large number of people, Stav Ninsky, who was the first secretary to the Israeli Embassy lit the candle. Shchats says that this act is meant to undermine Moldovan sovereignty and interfere with the democratic principles of the country's European goals.
Hanukkah is now on Jerusalem Street. A monument to Holocaust victims was erected there. Hanukkah has been moved to Jerusalem Street from the city center. Эммануил Гриншпун The monument was guarded by police for the second time. The site will be lit with candles every day through the Christmas season.
