British Museum to be Digitally Recreated In Minecraft

British Museum to be digitally recreated in Minecraft By Joe Miller Technology Reporter

23 September 2014

The video game Minecraft will recreate the British Museum in London, complete with all of its exhibits.

The project is part of the Museum of the Future scheme that aims to broaden the institution's appeal.

Many real-world organizations have created maps in the Minecraft universe, including Ordnance Survey and the Danish government, which aims to make young people more aware of their work.

Last week, Minecraft was purchased by Microsoft for $2.5bn (PS1.5bn).

A spokesperson for the museum said the project was still at "an early stage of planning", and the "build" had not yet begun.

She added that the organisation is planning to recruit people from the public to help with the "construction".

The British Museum

The first national museum of the nation founded in 1753

The most visited tourist attraction in the UK.

Nearly six million people visit the museum each year. The museum houses eight million items.

The natural history collections were moved to a building in South Kensington in the 1880s which would later become the Natural History Museum

Its instantly recognized Great Court, designed by Lord Foster, is the largest covered public space in Europe

One British Museum employee posted details of the project on social media site Reddit soliciting volunteers to join in.

He received an enthusiastic response from Minecraft fans from all over the world.

Initial stages

The first step of the process will be to digitally design the Great Court and facade of the building.

The institution hopes that this stage will be in place at the time of the public debate on changing public dialogues around museum collections in digital age. The event will be held on the 16th of October.

Ovum's Ovum gaming analyst Ed Barton told the BBC that the British Museum's shift towards Minecraft could make it "perceived to be something fun" and could be an educational tool for the younger crowd.

He added, "It's the digital version of building the British Museum using Lego." It must be constructed brick by brick.

He added that the institution was to be commended for crowdsourcing the project "as it transforms it into a collaborative thing" and will further inspire youngsters Minecraft enthusiasts.

He added, "What an awesome project it would have been to be asked to build the Elgin Marbles using Minecraft."

Reddit is the best way to register your interest in assisting the British Museum project.
