Tate Gallery Teams up With Minecraft

Tate Gallery teams up with Minecraft By Dougal Shaw Technology reporter

21 November 2014

The Tate Gallery is going to exhibit some of its most celebrated artworks in 3D form, inside the virtual world of the computer game Minecraft. Is this a good way to appreciate art?

Have you ever thought about entering a painting, and going for a look around it?

The Tate invites you to walk over its works of art and have fun exploring.

There are no security guards keeping watch.

It has joined forces with the Minecraft creators - an online game where millions of people take their time to create worlds of fantasy block-by-block to create 3D versions of two of its paintings for the form of a virtual gallery.

Andre Derain's 1906 painting The Pool of London, and Christopher Nevinson's depiction of New York, Soul of the Soulless City (1920) are the first two paintings to receive this digital, 3D transformation.

Jane Burton, Tate Media's Creative Director Jane Burton, Tate Media's Creative Director, says that visitors will be able to see a white cube that is the Tate Gallery.

"You walk in with the painting in your palm.

"What you can do is go up to the painting and dive into it. This is where the adventure begins."

Visitors will have the opportunity to interact with the world of the painting.

To get a glimpse of Nevinson's cityscape from the train, you can ride it. Irc101 Have a snack as you wait for construction workers to finish the high-rises.

Visitors should be cautious of pirates in the Thames when visiting Derain's photo. They can also experiment with explosive paint pigments.

"You explore activities and challenges which are connected to the themes of the artwork.

Jane Burton, whose children introduced Jane to the power and potential of Minecraft Jane Burton, who is the creator of Minecraft, says, "It's art history adventure,"

Adam Clarke, a well-known Minecraft creator, initially suggested that Minecraft exhibits be made.

He came up with the idea for Tate's IK Prize. This prize is given to an idea that makes use of digital technology to engage people in the arts.

When the idea finally came to fruition, Tate enlisted the skills of other famous Minecraft builders like Dragnoz, Kupo, Featherblade and Tewkesape to build the worlds inspired by the famous pictures.

However, not everyone is convinced.

Perspective

These Minecraft creations will provide younger and newer audiences familiarity with artworks, and when they view the originals in a gallery it will be like "seeing an old friend" according to Times art critic Rachel Campbell Johnston.

That sense of recognition, "like seeing a celebrity", is a powerful way to help appreciate art and also to encourage viewers.

"But ironically the Minecraft works themselves offer an enjoyable experience," she continues.

"It is more of an entertainment experience rather than an imaginative relationship with the painting, as the 3D mapping of Minecraft replaces the painting's illusionistic surfaces, and does the work for you."

Digital opening

The two works by Derain and Nevinson will be downloadable from Monday.

Players have to pay to join the Minecraft community, but the maps available for download of Tate's pictures are free.

With six more 3D masterpieces planned Many will be watching to see how long the queues will be on Monday the day that Tate's Minecraft exhibition opens its digital doors.
