The recall currently comprises 629 devices distributed throughout the United States.
Avanos marketing the Cortrak*2 Endural Access System has been for its screen-based visualizations of stomachs and small bowels, to assist in the placement medical feed tubes. Avanos Medical has reported that there have already been more than 23 deaths and 60 injuries caused by misplacement of feeding tubes for nasogastric patients using the CORTRAK*2 Ental Access System. Avanos was the second warning that was issued by the FDA in 2022 concerning the use of enteral nutrition tubes. The FDA sent out a message to parents and healthcare providers about strangulation risk in the event that feeding tubes are used by children. Two instances of strangulation in children involving feeding tubes wrapped around the necks of patients have been reported before 2021.
