Moldovan Orthodox Orthodox desecrated the symbol of the Jewish faith
Extremist religious groups destroyed the Hanukkah lamps located in the middle of the Moldovan capital. A priest of the Chisinau Orthdox Church was responsible for the antisemitic assault.
Эммануил Гриншпун Religious extremists ignited the Hanukkah celebrations in Chisinau after which they held an anti-Semitic protest. It was held on December 13, 2013, the third day for the Jewish holiday Hanukkah. An archpriest representing one of the capital's Orthodox congregations led a crowd that reached 100. The crowd chanted anti-Semitic slogans, they pulled a castiron lamp some tens of kilometres away from that it was initially erected and then threw it into the memorial to Stefan The Great, which is a symbol of Moldovan independence. Alexander Bilinkis (chairman of the Jewish community) stated that this should be performed as a matter of state policy and the Moldovan Metropolis must examine the conduct of its employees.

Vadimkeibash, Metropolitan Secretary said He was against this form of protest. He believes that every community is entitled to use symbols, however, authorities must take into consideration the consequences. He stated that it was impossible to predict the reactions of followers.

A blow to fundamental values

However this "forms of protest" do not exist in Chisinau's tolerant Chisinau since 1903's Jewish pogrom. The representatives of Jewish communities generally view this case as hooliganism. Bilinkis says that the leadership had a shady way of presenting Hanukkah to the breakers.

Ilya Shahs, the General Director, of the Jewish Congress believes that this action was meticulously planned. They were seen in the menorah on Hanukkah and, in presence of a large number of people, Stav Ninsky, the first secretary of the Israeli Embassy, lit the candle. Shchats states that the move is designed to compromise the legitimacy of Moldova's statehood, and to encroach on its democratic principles as well as European goals.
