Any items placed into the chest will be fed to the dispenser. The dispenser will then shoot the objects into the cactus, thus destroying the item.
A simple clock made of redstone can be made by connecting four repeaters to redstone dust. Quickly the circuit power and remove the power source.

Hoppers can be transformed into a Minecart to travel and collect items. Players can accomplish this using the hopper and Minecart at a table for crafting.
A Minecart with Hopper can be placed under a layer of blocks to take up the items it comes across.

The minecart will pick up all items that are placed on top of the stone. To retrieve objects that have fallen, you can place hoppers along the track.
